THOMAS LOWRY - VICTORIA

Thomas Lowry was 29 when he married Mary Florence Godfrey in Rockhampton, Qld. in 1902 so he was born circa 1873. He died 20/06/1930 aged 57, so his age on the marriage and death records are consistant. Also consistant is his parents names.

His marriage certificate (Rites of the Methodist Church) states that he was born in Melbourne Victoria. Parents were Thomas Lowry, hairdresser, and Elizabeth Farrow. The parents are NOT witnesses to their son's marriage.

I have been unable to find anything on Thomas the youngers birth or for that matter any details on his parents.

Would appreciate any help chatters may be able to come up with.

Hi,

The 1903 Electoral Roll has Thomas & Mary Lowry residing at 126 Alma St Rockhampton where Thomas was a plumber and Mary on domestic duties.

If so, does the certificate actually  give the former name for ELIZABETH?

It does not on this registration from the online index.

Gerry - I have most if not all of the info on Thomas junior in Qld aside from his possible birth in Melbourne Vic.
Sue - Yes the certificate shows the mothers names as Elizabeth Farrow. So does the marriage cert.

I have had a good look through the Victorian indexes in the period, but no real clues.
An unmarried woman named Elizabeth Farrow had a daughter in 1888, but cannot really establish any connection there.

Who was the informant informant, Jon?

It is quiite possible that the parental details were simply copied from the marriage certificate by someone for the certification.

This is a real brick wall. The informant to Thomas junior's death was his son Henry Thomas Lowry. I have been thinking the info on the death cert was too 'convenient'
It does look as though it was a copy over from the marriage cert.

If you are asking about Thomas senior's siblings, then I don't know. I cannot find anything on this family at all. Spent several hours yesterday going thru Trove to no avail.

It's almost as though the name is a fabrication or alias. AND hairdresser! Were men called haridressers in the late 19th early 20th century?

I have looked at the Melbourne Directory for 1875 and I can't find Thomas Lowry or Lowrie or Lowrey under hairdressers, which was a trade category in the Directory.

There is much effort to identify family relationships, so if the Bell-Booth people are described as BIL and SIL to Florence, does that mean they are related to her husband Thomas Lowry?


Who are the witnesses on the marriage certificate, 1902 please.
