Johns family
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 07:48 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on the Johns family of Portloe in Cornwall around the 1890's.  Ann Williams Johns, married to Edward Charles Collett died in childbirth in 1890.   Her twin sons Edward Charles and James Arthur both survived and were brought up by Ann's brothers and families - James Caddy Johns and Phoebe and Arthur Caddy Johns and Elizabeth.  I am researching the Collett family and would be interested in any of the Johns family who might have any information on these two nephews.  James Arthur Collett migrated to Australia, but I believe his twin Edward died in Redruth, Cornwall in 1970.  Many thanks for any help.
Cheers

Thanks for the prompt reply re Edward's marriages - I already had a marriage for him to Sarah and, so far, had not looked any further.  Another marriage makes interesting reading.  I have not been able to find anything online re a divorce between Edward and Sarah, however these records are only available up to 1937 so he could have divorced between then and 1939 when it would look as if he married Doris.  I think I might request copies of both marriage certificates to clarify this one.  There were two children born to Edward and Doris, in Plymouth in 1940 and 1942.  Thanks again for this info and I will keep looking to see what else I can find.
Cheers

How I wish these older families would choose more interesting names for their children!!!  I have three Edward Charles Colletts in my tree and the one who married Doris Falconar was the nephew of the one who married Sarah!!!  Three generations of males, all with exactly the same name, no wonder us poor old family history researchers get in a muddle !!  Thanks again
Cheers

Jas A Collett born c1890 sailed to Fremantle in 1914.

http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx

James A Collett married Frances M Ebbett in Blackwood, Western Australia, in 1916.

The index shows no births to that marriage, to 1931.

James Arthur Collett, aged 72, son of Edward C and Ann C, died in Blackwood in 1962.
Francis (sic) Mary Collett, aged 70, daughter of Thomas F and Grace, died in Blackwood in 1959.

There are no Collett deaths to 1961 showing father's name James.

So it seems likely the couple didn't have children, as they were married and died in the same location.

Frances Ebbett was born 1889 in Helston reg dist.

Thomas Ebbett and Grace Matthews were married 1880 in Falmouth reg dist.
Grace probably died in 1899 in St Germans, aged 40.
Thomas F died in 1949 in Penzance, aged 91.

Thomas remarried in 1901 to Sarah Collings Clemow. She died in 1922, and it looks  like he then immediately married a relation! -- Ellen Clemow.

In 1901, Thomas and wife Sarah C in St Keverne, Cornwall, are with children:
Frances Mary
Thomas Hope 1892
Henry Alfred Vincent 1894
Thomas and Sarah apparently did not have children of their own.

I'm not seeing a record of Frances Ebbett's passage to Australia.

You might be able to find descendants of Frances's brothers who had kept in touch with her in Australia.

Have you seen what googling "James Arthur Collett" will find you? ;)

http://www.collettfamilyhistory.net/Part%2021%20-%20The%20Cornwall%20Line%201890%20to%202008%20Rev.13.htm

Their marriage produced two children for James and Frances, James who was born during 1917, and Hazel who was born two years later.  James Arthur Collett died in 1962, while his wife Frances Mary Collett nee Ebbett, who had been born in 1889 the daughter of Thomas Ebbett and Grace Matthews, had died three years earlier during 1959.
21S25 James Frederick Collett Born in 1917 at Manjimup, WA
21S26 Hazel Jean Collett Born in 1919 at Manjimup, WA

I don't know why my search didn't find them. ... Ah, because the parents' names are not shown in the search results. They are the only Collett births in Blackwood. I don't see marriages or deaths for them.

However, son James's death notice might provide family information:

http://ryersonindex.net/search.php

COLLETT   James   Death notice   19APR2012   Publication         The West Australian   19APR2012

COLLETT   James Frederick (Jim)   Death notice   16APR2012   Death   95    late of Moonya Nursing Home   The West Australian   20APR2012

Details can be requested from that site. There is no other Collett death notice in The West Australian.

The present-day phone book has two Collett listings in Manjimup:

Thanks for the help eveyone, James Frederick and his family are known to us as we are in Australia, I am really trying to find any contacts for Edward through the Johns family who raised him.  I too found no children from his marriage to Sarah, so a living contact will be difficult.  I believe there are still some members of the Johns family living in Portloe, the Cornish village where the twins were raised, so I am hoping someone there could have some knowledge of the twins in their early years.  Will keep looking, never know what is around the corner.  Will have a look at Cornwall OPC, there might be something there. Thanks again in the meantime
Cheers

Well, there went an hour of my life.

Huh:

"I am researching the Collett family and would be interested in any of the Johns family who might have any information on these two nephews."

You already had the marriage for Edward, and you know all about James. (Sarah Stansfield's death record shows a dob of abt 1887: she was 40+ when she married in 1928. It's conceivable she was a widow, possibly with children when they married, with families who might be able to help you; only the marriage certificate would tell you. Her name is common and is definitely not from Cornwall. Of the two Sarah Stansfields with no middle name in 1911 born c1888, one is married and did have a middle name and died in Stockport, and the other is with parents in Lancashire. So it's quite possible that she was in fact a widow, first married after 1911, when she married Edward. I would certainly get their marriage certificate to find out for sure, and then look for births to her first marriage if she was a widow. There is no one named Stansfield in Cornwall in 1911.)

http://www.192.com/people/search/
Shows 12 Johns-s living in Veryan, and 8 in Portloe, with the household compositions. The villages are so small that even with the limited information available there without subscribing, mail would probably reach the addressees.

http://www.btexchanges.com/johns/verloe.search?type=residential
Gives a half-dozen listings in or close to Portloe.

Then there is the free search facility for the 1911 census (in addition to the 1901 census), which would find all children living with James Caddy Johns and Arthur Caddy Johns (there is also a William Caddy Johns), who could be traced forward.

Actually looking for often finds! -- and is much more likely to succeed than hoping a message on an internet board read by a tiny fraction of the population comes to the attention of someone related.
