Welcome to Rootschat.

There's a family called Sheals in Moy (1901) but you really do need to post more information and tell us exactly what you are looking for so that we can try to help you.

thanks for your replies,
my family of Shields are from Coalisland,Co Tyrone.
however i am sure my maternal great, great Grandfather was the first shields to come to Coalisland. my Grandfather was Francis Shields, a shoemaker, born Coalisland July 1889. his mother Mary Dalton or D'alton died at his birth.

my Great Grandfather John shields (sometimes called Sheals in other listings)a bootmaker of main st Coalisland.born Moy co Tyrone. his father, my Great Great grandfather, i think was called edward..he was supposed to come from the Moy area. my mum always heard Seyloran but not overly sure. its there i draw a blank.

my mum remembers her great aunt Mary Shields (John Shields's spinster sister)dying in 1946/47 and that she was buried with her parents(Edward)in Moy

Hi,
I can find that John SHIELS married Mary DALTON in Dungannon Roman Catholic Church on 9 Nov 1880 but I cannot find anything on Edward. I suspect his marriage was before 1864 when Catholic marriages were required to be registered.

Would this be the correct Francis Shields? if so, looks like father John re-married when he (Francis) was very young:

Same family in 1901 with more children in the household- son Edward possibly named for paternal grandfather:

you are both very kind, yes these are our family.
John Shields or Sheilds did remarry but not as fast as stated in census, we think his 2nd wife and mother of the 2 younger girls was possibly a housekeeper/childminder after his wifes untimely death.and then he married her, she was a kind step mother to them all.

i think Proni is my next stop as im finding it difficult to trace them in the Moy area..

Do you have the full marriage record for John Shields and Mary Dalton? It should have his residence at time of marriage and his father's name and occupation. The occupation could be very important.

Griffiths Valuations have an Edward Sheil on Charlemont Street and a John Shiels in The Square. Both of those addresses are in the town of Moy so they would likely be merchants or tradesmen. That would have been about 1851. Civil death registrations came in effect in 1864 and I don't see a match to that Edward. I also don't see that Edward in the trades directories on the PRONI web site and those go back to about 1858. The directories do show that John Shiels of Moy was a shoemaker though. Maybe an uncle?

Shoemaking took a lot of training so it usually runs in families.

Shields doesn't look to have been very common in the area so anybody with that name has a good chance of being relevant to your research.

"John Shields or Sheilds did remarry but not as fast as stated in census..."
Possible marriage: John Shields, Jan./Mar.1890 Dungannon Registration district, volume 1 page 620- Ellen Dunne on same page. This would fit with their daughter Annie born c1891.

Wonder if this is Ellen's death?
Ellen Shields, age 47, Apr./June 1915 Dungannon registration district volume 1 page 427
