Thank you Sunlaws, Very interesting information. I will have to find Jean Broomfields date of birth at home. Being new to this and living in Kansas, do you have any suggestions for me regarding the best place and method to gather information. I will be joining the Heritage Hub in Hawick soon and I know about Scotlands People. Everyone here has been very helpful and kind. I am happy I ran across this site.

Thank you, Mona

All the information I have given you on this thread came from easily available internet resources, Scotlandspeople, Familysearch and FreeBMD-it's just a case of getting to know the right questions to ask!

Hi All,
I have Ninian Steel Broomfield in my Family Tree. My Wife Denise's Grandmother, Florence E. Smith, on her Mother's (Florence Joan) side, was the only Daughter of John Carrington Broomfield, Son of John Broomfield, (Wife was Edith Allen Purvis) all from the Newcastle Area in the UK, named Northumberland in all the records. I note you are using Ninion, try using 'Ninian' which I believe to be the correct spelling?
All the best and good luck with your search.

At that time, there was no such thing as 'correct spelling'. How a name was spelled depended on how the person writing it down thought it should be spelled. That's usually why there are so many spelling variations; nothing to do with the 'owner' of a name.

But the general point is spot on. Search where possible using wildcards - in this case N*n*n or St*l* or Br*mf*ld.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Also don't rely solely on transcriptions, the old cursive script is often hard to decipher with a, e and o being misread as one another. If possible check the original record or a facsimile thereof.
