Loyas Green Wittersham
« on: Sunday 23 September 12 09:15 BST (UK) »
In 1861 census my relation Mary Body was with her uncle at Great Acton Manor Wittersham. I did put a post on about this house and the farm, but never really sorted it out. In 1871 she was housekeeper to her younger brother at Loyas green Wittersham. Does any one know where this is please?

On the map I have there is a small area or cul-de-sac as you head out of Wittersham to the north west which is called Lloyds Green.  Could this be your Loyas Green?

On the same map if you head east out of the village, the first road heading north is called Acton Lane.  About half a km along this lane is an area called Acton.  I wonder if that is where Great Acton House is?

Hope this may be of some help.

Regards,
Tony

Hi :),
Tony is absolutely correct about Lloyds Green. It is a typo error on the census .
Great Acton House was located at 5 Stocks Road,  next to Owley Cottages.  Have a look on street view see if you can find it.
The road seems to have modern housing  along each side on modern map.

Looks like your family were relatively well to do back then .

Quote from Wikipedia.
"At the turn of 20th century, by which time holding the manor had ceased to be equivalent with ownership of most land and property, the Body family held Wittersham, Colonel Heyworth held Palstre, and Mrs Samuel Rutley owned Owley."

I always thought (and you know what thought did) that Acton Manor was the large house just past the old Wittersham Nurseries (I can't remember the new name) and Owley on the road to Ebony.

That should have read between Wittersham Nurseries and Owley.

Thanks everyone who helped me out. Found out by just looking on ohotos Flickr and sending a message of a young lady pushing her nephew in a chair in Wittersham Lane, She was born at Acton farm and is related to me, then being a Dengate. Her mother has the family tree her father runs the farm and built a new house opposite Acton manor. Dickie Dengate is also a Vicar so is too busy to get in touch with me. Yes most of the Body's were quite rich. Sarah Upton Judge Wiiliam Body's wife was left £30,000/40,000 which now would be worth 1.8m to 2.2m does note seem much now with all thse millonaires each week, but then much have been a tremedous sum. One of her sons sold a large farm with all building for £2000 in 1920. Also we came back form Egypt in 1939 and The SS Orion was cruising from Sydney via Suez Canal for 5 months taking in coach tours and Hotels to 5 European Countries and when landing in England a use of a hired car for two weeks and then all hotels for the final months with food, tips, theathers all included £289
