Patrick and Bridget Ryan Newport Co Tipp.
« on: Sunday 23 September 12 02:24 BST (UK) »
We are researching our ancestors Patrick and Bridget Ryan of Newport Co Tip. They may have also lived closer to Birdhill, they were farmers so Birdhill and Newport being close, they may have lived between. Does anyone have any information on this family, born about 1820 . They had at least 5 children, Michael b 1848, Edmund, Patrickb. abt 1859, Peter abt 1855, Catherine abt 1841, Anne b. abt 1840, Bridget b. abt 1843. A Catholic farming family , we know little of them. The children mainly settled in the Clarence River district of NSW in Australia, coming here about 1863. We are also curious about any relationship with these couples, also of Newport
1. Daniel and Kate Ryan, Newport (son Thomas and others)
2. Thomas and Mary Ryan, Newport (son John and others)
3. John and Bridget Ryan , Newport (Bridget may have come to Australia in 1864 on Admiral Lyons with son Jeremiah, her husband had died in Newport)
The males may have been cousins or brothers of our Patrick, a lot of the children of all of these families came to live in the same are in Australia, the Clarence River near Grafton, and sponsored each other out here.
We are very keen to know more, this family is very important to us. Hopeful of a reply, regards Anne and Peter Ryan

not sure what  sources you've already tried.. it looks like transcripts of the RC parish of Newport are available on the pay-website at RootsIreland.

Baptism and marriage records for this parish go back to about 1795.

Ryan is a very common surname in the mid-west, so it could be difficult to establish definite links to the correct Ryan family.

Do you know Bridget's maiden name ?

Thanks for your reply, we have basically backtracked from the Australian end, the death certificate for Patrick and Bridgets son Michael (our g. grandfather) shows Newport and family notes tell of Newport. They emigrated in 1863 or therabouts, although we have yet to work out why they didnt all come out together, we have 5 siblings coming separately. We found the other couples quite by accident , researching those Ryans emigrating to the Clarence Valley here, and who sponsored them and found the link. Then of course we looked at where they settled here and they in fact lived within only a few miles of each other on the river. We havent used the pay per view site on births for Newport, how do we do that? We are a bit old fashioned, love the research and history but not so good with the technology! We don't know Bridgets surname, sadly the grandchildren here in Australia didnt know their grandparents, or any information for that matter, as they notified the wrong name for Patrick and didnt know Bridgets surname. Probably common in those days .Any ideas appreciated. regards Anne

Hi Anne, I think I might be able to help you. I'm currently researching who I think are the same family.
I'm doing a course in genealogy in the university here in Galway and as part of it, we must research the family tree in detail.
I have it started but expect to have much more detail in the coming weeks. We get access to records here like microfilm that are not available online. I'll also be making a trip up to Dublin to the National Archives which I expect will provide much information. If you wish to send me your contact details I can let you know if I discover that we are talking about the same family and if so, perhaps you could provide me with info on the Australian side and I could provide you with info on the members who stayed on in Newport and Birdhill. I am looking to do a detailed history of the family with any stories/anecdotes/info of hisorical interest. Thanks

Thank you , here is our personal email,
(*)
We have a good family history to share from our Australian end, but limited information from Co Tipperary. We are happy to help your research in return, if you think we have a link with the family, that would be wonderful. Look forward to hearing more, Anne
