Henry Risley (1850-1929?) and Family
« on: Friday 21 September 12 23:33 BST (UK) »
Henry Risley, a veneer maker, married Elizabeth Orchard Brown in Shoreditch in 1869 and had four children: Henry, 1870, William James, 1872, Etheldra, 1876, and Lily, 1878. The family appears together in 1871 and 1881 census.

I have circumstantial evidence that Elizabeth split from Henry and emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, USA with Edward Arlidge, a ship caulker who also ran a coffee house, and became the parents of my grandmother.

Elizabeth apparently took her daughters with her to NY, but not her sons.

If anyone has confirming or disputing information regard Henry Risley and his family, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks all for the responses.  My Henry's father's name was Henry and his wife was born in Ireland--so I'm certain that's a generation off.

But the Mrs Arlidge and 3 children emigrating to USA are likely the family going to NY.  I've traced the Manning family and Smith family and it all seems to tie together.

Valda's information on the 1871 census is new information for me--it expands the number of siblings of Henry although finding additonal information about those siblings has not been productive, nor finding any military records of Henry's father, a gunner in the Royal Artillery, according to 1851 census.

The Royal Artillery service record of Henry Risley, b abt 1822 in Mere nr Knutsford, Cheshire, is available on the pay site Findmypast.

www.findmypast.co.uk

Also there is the Great Budworth parish register, together with the Cheshire Bishop's Transcript thereof, showing the 3 March 1822 baptism of Henry Risley, son of James (a keeper) and Rachel, of Mere.

The death index at www.italiangen.org has an Emily Arlidge, age 1, who died 16 Jun. 1883 in Kings County (which is Brooklyn).  I thought she might be the infant on the passenger list.

There is a birth record for Emily Arlige, daughter of Edward Arlige & Elizabeth Brown, here:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FD5Q-FYW  She was born about 2 months after the other Emily's death, so maybe they reused the name of the daughter they lost?  That seemed to be a more common practice back then.

Thankyou Shellyesq for that intriguing suggestion.  That would explain why I have been unable to find anything definite about Emma.   However, I do have a 1892 census that lists all of the sisters indicating that Emma was still alive in 1892.  It is available at familysearchorg at: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11673-129868-48?cc=1529100&wc=10936431

Another question that I have been unable to solve is that on the four columns of the census, Edward and Elizabeth Roberts are on the bottom of column two and the three sisters (listed as Roberts) are on the top of column three, but my grandmother, Emily Roberts (Arlidge) is listed midway down on column four seemingly not apart of the other Roberts.  By 1892, it is my understanding that Arlidge had died, Elizabeth Orchard Brown remarried Edward Roberts, and the children all took the Roberts name.
