Married twice to the same partner

Hi, I have relatives who got married twice the first marriage was in 1924 West Ham and the second marriage was also at West Ham , but in 1943.

The wife was catholic, but we think the husband was not, the family think it may be if the husband became a catholic in 1943 so they married again, both marriages are registered at the GRO so it is not like they just had a blessing.

Is this possible to have your marriage registered twice.

This we don't know the only thing is that no one has ever seen any marriage photos. We do know that he did not want to get married the first time, but she was pregnant.

It's the only explanation I can think of for there being 2 marriage entries but there may be other reasons that I am not aware of.

Thank you Carole, I could not justify spending sixty pound to find out, I think I will try to search out some older relations who may know or I may ask the friar he has been helpfull in the past.

Another possibility - and one that I have had pointed out to me in my research - is that the first marriage may have been void or annulled. The one I looked into was tied up with bigamy.......

Divorce, a civil process, wouldn't be recognised by the Catholic church, the marriage would have to be annulled.

I have a friend who is still alive who married the same person twice, she has 2 wedding anniversaries, reason being she married the second time in a Catholic church, she had a child by then, her husband became a catholic years after

A church would never knowingly marry the same people twice if they are already legally married. The Catholic church has a ceremony called convalidation. This validates the marriage in a religious sense, but the priest cannot legally register that marriage again and send copies of the register to the local registrar, because the marriage is already registered.

On a marriage certificate you state your status, single, widowed or divorced. You can't state married. Therefore to marry again you would have to state you are free to marry.
