Many thanks for the helpful and prompt replies. Particularly Adamb for the 1901 record and Trish for the many replies.
It certainly looks like James and Margaret could be the ones (I do normally confirm findings by purchasing certificates!).
My difficulty arose because, using the well known FindMyPast, the family identified by Adamb cannot be found, and I was looking for continuity through the census records. Without the 1901 record the trail falls apart.
