John Jones (1748-1814 Chirk) and Elizabeth
« on: Thursday 20 September 12 02:06 BST (UK) »
I am looking for more informaiton on John Jones, who died August 16, 1814 in Halton, Chirk, age 66.  I suspect he is one and the same with John Jones who executed a will dated July 24, 1814, and whose estate was in probate by 1815.  He was said, in will abstract, to be residing in Brynkinalt, Chirk at the time of his death.  No occupation is given. In other abstracts from around the same time, I often see occupations listed of "farmer" or "gentleman" or "yeoman" - (I believe Brynkinalt and Halton are areas that may have overlapped at times, and were next to one another).  Was this John Jones one and the same with John Jones of Llangollen who married Elizabeth Hughes in Chirk in 1794?  In the will abstract, there is listed:

Thomas Evans, trustee/friend, resident of Trifynnant, Ruabon
Edward Wright, trustee/friend, resident of Ruabon
Elizabeth Jones, wife
Sarah Jones, dau
Robert Jones, son
Ann Jones, dau
Edward Jones, son
John Jones, son
Elizabeth Jones, dau
Richard Jones, son
William Jones, son
Evan Jones, son
Thomas Jones, son

Thomas Jones is listed as executor (which I believe means he was age 17 or older)
Aaron Hughes (who may be the same as the 90 year-old in 1841 Wales Census living in Halton, Chirk), John Williams, and Patrick Evans listed as witnesses.

If this John Jones is the same as the only one listed as dying in 1814 (or 1815) in Chirk Parish records, then he may have been married twice.  I see what appear to be only two families of John and Elizabeth Jones living in the Chirk area and having children in the 1790s-1800s.  One lived in Pennyclawd.  The other in Black Park or Halton.

I see a Richard Jones bapt. Aug 25, 1805 in Halton, Chirk, son of John and Elizabeth.  He was born July 31, 1805.  He may be one and the same with the farmer Richard Jones, living at Pen y Park for many years, farming over 100 acres with Evan Jones and perhaps another sibling, Edward Jones.  I suspect he is a brother of the John Jones, I am researching, who was born Sept. 8, 1804 (bapt. 1805), to John and Elizabeth.  Also, I see a William Jones, born Sept. 30, 1806 (bapt. 1807) to John and Elizabeth.  Perhaps Thomas Jones, executor, was born prior to John's marriage to Elizabeth and/or in another town, as I could not find a good match in Chirk records.

The will is entry #70 for 1815.  If someone with access to the books in Chirk could do a quick look-up to see if there are more details - perhaps the contents of the estate would give some further clues as to the identity of this John Jones - I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello,
I came across this post as I am trying to piece together my roots. In my tree I have got stuck on a John Jones from Chirk, Wales, born in 1823 who married Mary Ann Parker in Lancashire in 1848. As I do not find a whole lot of Joneses specifically from Chirk, I was wondering is this person is related to your John Jones (1748-1814).
Regards,
Eric

There are plenty of Jones' from Chirk Eric!It appears his father was yet another John Jones according to the marriage record on Family Search.I'm looking at a possible in the Chirk Baptisms transcribed by Clwyd FHS baptised 02/06/1822.The record says he was the son of a John(Collier) and Mary Jones of "Ley".Whilst I don't know where this Ley is in the Chirk area I know someone on here who will!

Thank you for your kind help and warm welcome,  :) I have been looking through Google and other means for a long time and only now this topic surfaced. My tree is on ancestry.co.uk if you think there might be something of your interest in it, I use the same name on there.
Thanks again, wondering what will turn up.

Welcome, Eric  :)

.The record says he was the son of a John(Collier) and Mary Jones of "Ley".Whilst I don't know where this Ley is in the Chirk area I know someone on here who will!

Regards
William Russell Jones.

I think Ley might well be either Ley Farm or in that vicinitiy. It's on the top lane between Chirk Green and Black Park - map link:

Just seen other posting and not sure if this is relevant now. I walked that lane many times as a toddler and beyond.

I can confirm that there are/were many John Jones in the Chirk area  ;D

Hello Gadget, thanks for your help as well. I have never been to Wales so I haven't a clue as to those places but I will fire up the Google Earth tomorrow to have a look.
