Marriage 1911 please
« on: Monday 17 September 12 16:01 BST (UK) »
Hi help please
Would anyone be visiting the Lancashire Archives please look up a marriage in 1911 (I'd like to be sure before I send off for it.)

Parents and occupations on the following wedding certificate

John Bill Downes Weaver 1889/90 born Dudley
Married Mary Ann Collins 1895
1911 St Johns The Baptist Earlstown vol c page 273

We know Johns dad is George weaver
Unsure about Mary it's either Thomas or Michael Collins

I'd love to visit myself but too far away
Thanx in advance :-)

Hi

To narrow any search you need to include details of which quarter it took place in.

Freebmd shows it was in the September qtr
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

 ???

I don't think the Archives hold the wedding certificates, and in any case you can't simply look at them! You have to pay.

They will hold the parish registers, but not sure that will have the information you require?

Are you sure that Lancashire Record Office has the church registers. I can't see them on their catalogue. It might be worth ringing them to check. Apologies if you've already contacted them and know they're there.

Thanx Gibel for the advice

I don't want the cert from them as I know they dont do that, I just want to check I have the right family from any records if that makes sense, Before i send off for it.
Going to take a chance and going to send off for cert thanks :-)

I Emailed them here is there response

This Office holds church records of christenings, marriages and burials for several churches in Lancashire, and you can see a list of these churches on our website www.archives.lancashire.gov.uk This lists the churches we hold records for alphabetically (I believe the marriage registers for Earlstown may still be at the church), and gives information on the covering dates for christenings, marriages and burials and the formats they are available in. There are separate lists for C.E., R.C. and Non-conformist churches.

Still learning all this, I'm getting confused :-(

What they are saying is that they hold the Parish Registers, and not the Civil Registration documents (Marriage Certificate).

Marriage certificates can be ordered at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Or from St Helens Register Office

They're also saying that they believe the  parish registers for the church in Earlestown are still at the church.

Hi

Lancashire Record Office doesn't have the Parish Registers for St John the Baptist, Earlestown. The church is in the Diocese of Liverpool but Liverpool Record Office doesn't have the registers either. St Helens Archive does have an Index of marriages in the St Helens area, this does include St John the Baptist but it probably won't have any more information than on LancashireBMD.

There is no mention of the location of the Parish Registers on LancahireOPC or Genuki, this suggests that most likely the Registers are still held by the Church. You could contact the Church and check the location of the Registers, if they still have them they may be prepared to tell you the information you require.

Maybe someone more local can advise ...
would Earlstown come under Newton Le Willows or Wigan and Leigh ???

1895   on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Mary Ann Collins      Wigan and Leigh .....mothers maiden name  AUSTIN   WIG/197/409

Mary Collins             Newton Le Willows     St Helens     NLW/55/3

if ...Earlstown DOES come under Wigan and Leigh ...it`s possible that Mary Ann Collins mother was

1887 (lancashirebmd)   James Collins to Margaret Austin    Wigan and Leigh   ROW/64/62

maybe worth checking out ...BUT ...doesn`t match your thoughts of Thomas or Michael as fathers name ???
