This thread is of interest to me as I too have ancestors from Norton in the Moors.
myrdon, you have a John Poynton mentioned, born 1621.
I have him as the husband of Mary Lane, married 14th May 1655 at Norton in the Moors.
They had a daughter, Ann, baptised 7th Feb 1658 at Norton.
Mary died and was buried 27th June 1663 at Norton - “wife of John Poynton”.
John Poynton then remarried 25th Oct 1666 Frances Rose at Wolstanton - just 4 miles away.
Mary Lane was the daughter of William Lane, who in his will of 1676, leaves “Anne Poynton my grandchild twenty shillings”.
Anne's brother, Richard Lane, is my 9 x great grandfather.
So I'm not quite related to you! but the families would have known each other back then,
I have been searching for Manorial documents for Norton in the Moors to see if there was any more information about my family.
Not an easy task!
The village and surrounding area was not owned by one ‘Lord of the Manor’, and there are pertinent records all over the.place. There are some Norton in the Moors Rent Rolls at Birmingham Library (who are decidedly unhelpful - you cannot even get copies of things from them. The only way to get anything is to visit in person. As I live on the other side of the world, that is not going to happen!).
There are quite a lot of Norton Court Rolls at Staffordshire Record Office, who will search them for you (at a cost of course - not too unreasonable). There are also a lot of records at Keele University Library Special Collections including those for the Manor of Tunstall (under which a lot of Norton and surrounding areas came).
I have came across an interesting document which mentiones Randall Poynton.
I don’t know if you have seen it.
It is on the Norton in the Moors Rent Roll for “the last day of May’ 1608.
This is at Birmingham Library, but I found that familysearch has filmed some of these Rent Rolls - so you can look at them for free on their website.
Unfortunately, my Lane family don’t seem to appear in these documents, or in the documents at Stafford Record Office, but I have found some mentions of them in the documents at Keele University Library Special collections, which was very exciting!
The clip reads: (I hope I’m not treading on your toes here!)

There is a Baddeley Green now at Norton in the Moors.
The ‘capons’ will be hens. I have an ancestor who lived in Derbyshire and had to provide a capon “sound and well carved” a year as part of his rent.
I'm guessing either Richard Meare, or John, were the father of Jana Meare married to Randall Poynton, but can't see a baptism for her. As you know, the early Norton registers are in a poor state, with missing years.
There are lots of mentions of 'Meare' people in these Rent Rolls.
I haven't seen any more Poynton names, but then I have not checked them all thoroughly - as I say, I was looking for the name Lane. They would be worth looking at if you haven't already seen them.
Happy hunting!
