Hi,

Regarding origins of names, a school teacher told my father that the Theobald name was of Swiss origin, this would have been back somewhere between 1913 and 1923.  I've taken my line back to 1750 and so far no sign of a Swiss origin, all have been Essex born, no doubt the name might well have come over with the Angels Angles or Saxons or some other lot with a Germanic type language.

Family lore can be useful to know but sometimes there is only a grain of truth in it, if any at all, so needs to be treated with suspicion.

Regards.

Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

The surname Turvey has been found in East Anglia at least as far back as 1395 when there was a Norfolk priest called John Turvey:

It appears that the main "line" originated from the Bedfordshire village of Turvey in the 1200s. There was a smattering of Turveys in East Anglia in the 1841 census.

I doubt if the Turveys were German origin, although a maternal line may well have been of course. I haven't found any Turvey ancestries in East Anglia going back before 1760 I'm afraid.

Incidentally, have any of your male Turvey relatives had their Y DNA tested? It would be exciting if they were a match to me, as our lines would have probably diverged about 700 years ago.
