Help deciphering place name

This place name in Shropshire was transcribed on the census as "Adink" which I am unable to locate. Can anybody make a suggestion as to what it might be?

Can you give us the name of person, which census this is and any reference numbers you have. It might be useful if we can compare the  letters with others on the page.

It does look like it starts with an Od and maybe ends with a k with a flourish, which seems to 'flourish' in the wrong direction forthe tail of a k. Maybe it ends with a t?    :-\

Hello Ruskie and thank you for taking the time to look at my message. It is from the 1851 census and the person is Samuel Harris. Staffordshire, Parish of Sedgley and City of Wolverhampton. The reference is H0107/2031 and he is the last individual on the page. Hope that helps. It is a bit of a mystery to me but I have no local knowledge.

Not a local either  ;) ... had a quick look at list of localities in area, first letter does look like an O ... could it be an abbreviation of Oswestry  :-\ just a suggestion.

On the next census page is a Mary age 51 b Hampshire. Her surname ends with the same letter/s and flourish as the mystery placename. Her surname is transcribed as Davonport, but I think it is Devonport. So it may be that the place name ends in 'rt'. I have not found a capital O to compare with the placename yet.

Similar on image 15 of the census for the surname Smart .... So I would say definitely ends in 'rt'. I still can't make sense of the place name though, even thinking about misspellings, and regional accents to vary the spelling, and perhaps the enumerator being unfamiliar with Shropshire place names.  :-\

Misheard as Oderton.
Abbreviated to Odertn
(but I can't see a the small 'n' - maybe the pencil stroke has written over the top of it?  ;))
Maybe wishful thinking?  :)

I received a PM from 'jimbach' suggesting Hodnet as the place name (misheard as Odnet) - I think this looks very feasible.  :)

If you haven't already done so, it would be well worth looking for Samuel in the 1861 census (and later) to see what he says his birth place is.

My thanks again to those who replied to my querie. I think the Hodnet suggestion will be the first that I follow up, Ruskie. I need a place of baptism to try to get a lead on Samuel's parents whose names I don't know. He died in 1851...so no later census returns to look at. I also haven't been able to identify him satisfactorily in the 1841 census because of a question mark as to the name of his wife (or wife at the time) and by that time his daughter, who is my ancestor, had married and moved away. I had a look at Family Search before doing this and it appears that the place of birth has been transcribed there as "Odnet". Anyway, I will start by looking at the registers for Hodnet (and surrounding parishes if necessary) and hope for the best. At least I now have a few leads to follow up and for that I'm very grateful.
