McCOTTER family BelfastT 1897-1911
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 13:08 BST (UK) »
I have such scant info on my husbands father. I have his name William McCotter, he married Jane McConnell.  Jane is on the 1911 census aged 6.
I now am 99% sure of Jane's mother (Hannah or Annie MCLEAN).
Can anyone help me - a newbie - find out anything on William McCotter , amazingly we know nothing about his DOB, marriage date, other than he came to England in the late 1940's with 7 of their children.
Two later children were born in England. (My husband being the youngest) There are only three surviving children and know one knows eithers DOB.

Carol,

Could you provide us with a little more information. Do you have an estimate of Williams birth year also his religion. Also whereabouts in Co Antrim do you have Jane. Did Jane go to England with William? Also if you have the names and approx birth years of their children that would be helpful. Please don't post anything about living individuals as the information will be removed the the moderators.

Well we saw this and are trying to establish if its him or not. If it is then we are on our way so to speak.  I think a marriage certificate of Jane and Willliam would probably help...i have no idea where to get this from.  As the eldest son was born in 1927 (nov.) i suspect they married 1926/27, it would have been Belfast I am sure.
Seems that Williams mother married three times, the last name she had was Moran.
Isnt this difficult.?
 :)

Carol,

Unfortunately NI have practically no online BDM's after 1921. I think your best bet would be to pay for an initial search of the records at GRONI of Williams marriage to Jane because you are certain of the names and an approximate date.

Scroll down this this link to "Request a search of the registration indexes" to find out what is required. Then go to the "Do it Online " tab at the top of the page and select "Government, citizens and rights online" where you will find the online form. Once you have the certificate it will you Wm and Janes fathers name and hopefully their occupations.

Hi Carol54,
I came across this chat session when browsing about my family. Unfortunately, I can confirm that the William McCotter you mention above is not the one you are looking for. He was my grandfather's brother and lived in Belfast with his 6 children until his death c 1967/8. The family never moved to England at any stage.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
Kind regards,
Stephen

GRONI online have the marriage of Wm McCotter to Jane McConnell on 3 Apr 1926 in Belfast.
The certificate will show fathers names and addresses etc.
Also marriage of Annie McLean to Wm McConnell on 3 Mar 1897 in Belfast.
Will cost £2 to view cert on line. May clear up some issues for you.
