Ships Liverpool to Wellington 1901-03
« on: Friday 27 May 05 13:25 BST (UK) »
Can anyone plse advise where to look for a list of the ships and passangers for the above dates.
My husbands grandfather has been found on 1901 census in Middlesex England and we know that he worked on building the Railway Station Dunedin NZ.  Work on this was 1903/04.

His name was Henry Sidney Bingham B1881.  Henry wld never tell the family why he emigrated and wld love to find out more info.

Thanks
Leonie

You're in luck. A Henry Sidney BINGHAM married Emma Annie LAWRENCE in 1907.

A Henry Sidney BINGHAM is buried at Anderson's Bay Cemetery Dunedin, and was a retired Stonemason. He died 9 February 1979 aged 97 years and came from London England. He had lived 75 years in the province (not necessarily the same as total years in the country) and was buried on 12 Feb. His address was 127 Queen Street Dunedin. Burial Plot 15, Block 204 (old plot - suggests there are others buried there)

There is also a Probate Record for Henry Sidney BINGHAM, a Monument Stonemason, filed 4 May 1979. Held at Archives NZ Dunedin Office, reference DAAC 9076 D239 326/79. You can order this probate.

I'll look for the Monument Inscription for you.

Dear Riley,

Thank you for the information you have given and your prompt reply, my husband actually worked for the family stonemasonry firm for a while.

We have a photgraph of the headstone.

What I would really like to find out is the passanger ships that operated between 1901-03 .  Was he an assisted immigrant, prisoner, or payed full fare.

Just that family stories dont match up.

Old Henry Sidney forebade any of his family from making contact with his brother and sister in England, told the family he was 15 (and census shows him still in England at 20)when he arrived in Wellington then tossed a coin as to whether he went to Dunedin or Auckland.  He also told the family that he had to leave England due to poor lungs, but the old boy lived to 97yrs old.

Kind regards
Leonie

Riley,
Something else I have just found out, apparently he came out on the same ship as Sir James Fletcher of Fletcher Construction and James Love of Naylor Love, but again I cannot find anything on the internet as to which boat these men came out on.

Regards

Leonie

Thanks Zephyr,

I have since found out that it may have been on the ship Ruapehu.

Now just have to see if I can find the lists of passangers for the Ruapehu

If you can tell me the approximate date (e.g the quarter of the year) the 'Ruapehu' arrived, and hopefully the port of arrival, I can probably find the passenger list for you.

Riley,

Thank you.  The nearest I can come to a date is from a newspaper article I have come across and it says he arrived in 1904, but doesnt say what part of the year.

It says he arrived in Wellington and tossed a coin as to whether he went to Auckland or Dunedin.

So assuming the port was Wellington.

Appreciate your help

Leonie
