John Beresford, Ireland
« on: Friday 14 September 12 20:46 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I have just found out from a Roots.Chat member in Lanarkshire, Scotland, that my maternal great-grandfather, John Beresford, was born in Ireland, he was given as 27 in the UK census of 1881, by which time he had moved to Airdrie or Glenmavis in Lanarkshire. His occupation is given as a quarryman. So he must have been born about 1854. I'm afraid that's all I know about him, so I'm not very hopeful! But if anyone in Ireland can offer any suggestions as to John's origins I would be most grateful. Linda.

Hello,

do you have his parents' details from his marriage? This information may help you to trace him in Ireland.

There are other Beresfords in the same area who could well be connected.
1881 - John (father) with sons Samuel and Thomas. Have you seen these?
There is also Hugh Beresford and family.
They may all be 'Berrisfield' in 1871.
You would have to check these carefully because there are a couple of Johns born around the same time.  :-\

regards
heywood

Lanarkshire thread has more information-

Was just going to ask about the marriage certificate  :) Since John was born before the srt of birth registration (1864) you will need to know as much information as possible before searching Irish records.

Do you know what religion the family would have been? If John's parents were married in a non-Catholic ceremony 1845 onwards there should be a civil record which will help pinpoint location.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Linda,

Do you want to PM me?

Are you talking about Lizzie Lumgair, who was my gran's cousin.

She used to write to her
