Edward Doherty Family of Buncrana
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 00:12 BST (UK) »
Greetings --

I'm researching my maternal grandmother's family of origin and can't seem to get past her immediate family and parents, as listed in the 1901 Census. They lived in Buncrana. The father's name was Edward and mother's was Fanny (Duggan, I've been told, but can't confirm). It appears that Edward was born about 1839 and Fanny about 1859. The children were: John (1880), Mary (1882), Michael (1884), Kate (1887), Ellen (1889), Bridget (1890), Bernard (1891), Eddy (1893), Anne (1895), Joseph (1898), Patrick (1900). My grandmother, Frances, was not listed on the 1901 Census (assume she was away?) but was born in 1892. The names and birth years of the others have been confirmed by older members of the family, so I believe this to be the correct Doherty family. All of the children came to the U.S. but two (not completely sure which two).

I've been very successful in researching the other lines of my family, but the Doherty line has stumped me. Where do I go from here? As you can tell, I'm new to the world of Irish genealogy; it's overwhelming!

Thank you for any direction you can provide!

Eleanor

Hello Eleanor,

I take it this is your family

Doherty Family 1901

Ludden is in Lower Fahan Parish SEE MAP

A resource you may have looked at Donegal Genealogy Resources may be worth another look now you have a handle on the actual location of Ludden.

I will in due course look a little further but await a reply on what you may have found.

Padraig.

Hi Padraig,

Yes, that's my family (absent my grandmother Frances). Thank you for the clarification on the name Ludden, and the link to the map. I'd looked at that map before but not connected Ludden with my family. On the Griffeth's Valuation Index, I see several Edward Dohertys, but I'm not sure which might be mine. I do see a Denis McGonigle, Ballymacarry, who I now realize married Kate Doherty. I'm hoping that detail might help somehow!

Any other thoughts? I appreciate your help.

Eleanor

Hello Eleanor,

At the time of the Griffith Valuation 1857 for Ludden(Luddan) Edward would have been in his youth. and the details below containing the heads of households indicate a number of Dohertys in Ludden who may be Edwards father

Doherty Families Ludden(Luddan)

There are records of three Edward Doherty birth/baptism in Donegal for the period 1837-1841 in the County of Donegal at rootsireland.ie. Of the christian names on the Griffith Valuation used to cross reference, only John  returns a positive result.

Hi Padraig,
Does that imply that John is Edward's father?

Hello Eleanor,

Edward appears to marry late in life given the age of Fanny. We need to ascertain a date of marriage, obtain certification which in turn should detail his fathers name.

The picture I have given is merely a best guess given the details we have and the elimination of the other Doherty fathers from Ludden make it a mere possibility.

Civil registration certificates should allow you to narrow down the probabilities, but John is looking good to me..

Hi Eleanor,

Just found what might be the most important link

Edward Doherty Marriage
Spouse

As the volume number and page number are the same, and your Duggan reference in your first post, I think its safe to assume this is the marriage to answer your questions.

You will need to order the cert to move on further.

Oredering Certificates

Hope it all works out.

Padraig,
You have been so generous with your time. Thank you! The certificate process (payment from U.S.) sounds daunting, but I'll give it a try. I appreciate your help.
