Sandwich marriage look up - Jacobs
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 09:07 BST (UK) »
I am in possession of an old family tree that suggests Daniel Jacobs married Mary Richardson on 14 July 1777 at St Peters Church Sandwich. I was just wondering if there was anyone who could confirm this for me and if the marriage entry has any other detail (parents, witnesses, where they came from etc)? The same piece of paper also states that both Daniel and Mary were buried at St Peters on 19th August 1841 - surely this can't be true?!
Thank You

The detail of the marriage that you have is correct.  The marriage was by Banns and both bride and groom were stated to be of the Parish.  The witnesses were Ann Fennel (my transcription)and George Temple who was the Parish Clerk.  That is all the information given.

I hope this helps.

I will look into the burials conundrum.

Regards,
Tony

According to the St Peter's Register there was only the burial of Daniel Jacobs on 19 August 1841 and his age was said to be 88 and he was brought from Ramsgate.

It is likely that he is on the 1841 census age given as 85 and living in Hereson, St Lawrence, Ramsgate.

I have not been able to find a burial for Mary Jacobs in St Peter's Parish at Sandwich.

Tony

Thank you very much.

I had seen te Daniel Jacobs you mention in the 1841 census but was very doubtful that he was one and the same person as "my" Daniel Jacobs. However, if he was bought back to Sandwich from Ramsgate this adds weight to the suggestion that he is the same person. I wonder what happened to Mary? Perhaps she died in Ramsgate?

I wonder if Daniel was born in Sandwich?

Daniel Jacobs was not born in St Peter Parish, Sandwich, or at least there is no record, as such, in the Parish Register.

However, there is a possible baptism, in 1754 at Wingham, for a Daniel Jacobs with parents Thomas and Elizabeth as on Family Search
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N1ZF-XRZ

I believe this to be a strong possibility as there are three later baptisms in St Peter to Thomas & Elizabeth Jacobs
Benjamin 1758
Sarah 1751
William 1765

Catharine was the last child baptised to Daniel & Mary in St Peter in 1790.  After that it appears the family moved parish to St Mary the Virgin, again in Sandwich.  A further three children (of Daniel & Mary) were christened there including a Benjamin in 1794.

Worth considering?  ???

Regards,
Tony

I have followed this up and purchased the death certificate for Daniel Jacobs who died 1841. Surprisingly the informant at the death was Elizabeth Hills, daughter; the 1841 census shows Daniel living with Elizabeth Hills and her family. Elizabeth Jacobs originally marries Aaron Solley, then George Hills. The only thing is "my" Daniel Jacobs didn't have a daughter called Elizabeth. There is an Elizabeth Jacobs born in St Lawrence in 1780 to a Daniel and Mary - it appears she is the only child born here. My conundrum is this; Elizabeth Jacobs is born and marries twice in St Lawrence, and she cannot read or write (I know the three sons of my Daniel Jacobs could), but Daniel Jacobs upon his death is bought from Ramsgate to Sandwich to be buried. If Elizabeth was his only child, surely he would have been buried in St Lawrence in Ramsgate? I know his wife was not buried in Sandwich so there must be a reason why he was bought there. My intial thought was it's because he has family there, possibly other children...

More confued than when I started!
