Flynn/Keegan families Celbridge/Leixlip area
« on: Monday 10 September 12 16:56 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather William Flynn was born in Celbridge in 1853. He married Bridget Keegan, born 1852 in Leixlip. They moved to England and I have census records of them there, but nothing from Ireland.

Is anyone familiar with these families?

Also, would appreciate guidance on finding birth records for them. Have had no luck searching the records.

Family anecdotes have them reminiscing about going back to Ireland from England in the summer to pick strawberries around Lucan. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance
Angela

Full civil registration started in 1864 - so there are no birth certs before that date. For earlier details you will need to research parish records, and to do this you first need to establish the denomination of this family and where they lived at the time - i.e. town, townland or parish.

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Do you know if William and Bridget married in England or Ireland ?
The place of birth of their eldest child can sometimes help with locating the marriage..

Father's names and occupations should be included on a marriage cert, and could help confirm, or rule out, possible matches in Griffith's Valuation or parish records.

There are a few public trees online which mention William and Bridget - one of which suggests a marriage in February 1874 in Salford. Might be worth following up...

Oh, wow, yes that's them. They did marry in Salford in 1874! How would I find those trees?
Thanks so much.

details from FreeBMD of that possible marriage cross-match :

  Quarter/Year : Mar 1874
  Registration District : Salford
  Volume : 8d / Page: 99
  Thomas Doran
  William Flynn
  Bridget Keegan

  Theresa McAnulty

you can order a marriage cert from GRO UK to see the details - Certs OnLine

Many public trees are on Ancestry, and I believe you can access these without charge at : http://www.mundia.com/  None of the Flynn/Keegan trees I saw had earlier details for William or Bridget.

Hello Angela48, William was my great grandfather. My grandfather is his son William and my father is John, Williams(jnr) son. I have been looking through the on-line census databases and came across your dialogue in this forum. I had no idea of the maiden names of any of my maternal great and great great grandparents so to find that Bridget was a Keegan was very interesting. If you have any other information of this nature I would be grateful to see it.

Like you, I tracked the Flynns back to Ireland relatively easily, in spite of errors on the 1911 Census entry listing the place of birth for Willaim as "Albrige", but after that things have got harder. In particular, I am quite interested in my maternal grandmother Jane who appears to have been born in Notting Hill, which is something I was not aware of. I can remember my mothers father, who used to visit every Monday lunchtime in the early 1960s. I also visited, with my older brother Peter, one of my grandmothers (Jane Gray?) in her house in Salford, again in the early 1960s.
What is your connection.Best regards, Gerhard

Hi Gerhard:
It sounds like your father John is my mother, Irene's, older brother, which makes us cousins! I now have quite a bit more information on this family so it might be better if you contacted me directly rather then me trying to lay it all out here. My email is *

Hello Angela48, your email address was removed for as part of the privacy protection on this site (I think). I don't know my way around this site yet as I only registered on it yesterday, but I think there is some private messaging (PM) on this site which we can use.

I'm sure we have probably met at some family event over the years.

Yours,

Gerhard
