My Great Grandfather Bartholomew Kidd was born in America (no further info) in 1863.  He returned to Scotland and was married in 1884 to Elizabeth Smellie in Falkirk.  His parents were Thomas Kidd, a labourer, and Ann McDonald or Kidd. She later remarried and became Ann Meikle.
I can find no trace of Bartholomew prior to 1884 either in Scotland or USA.  Neither do either of his parents appear anywhere.
Can anyone suggest the best way forward with this search.

Do you know the nationality of his parents?  Do you know their approximate year(s) of birth, please?  I haven't found Bartholomew in America and after a short search, do not see him in Canada, although I don't have access to some Canadian records.

All I have on Bartholomew's place of birth is from Scottish Census which gives his place of birth as America
