Newtownholmes McManus Downe
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 10:38 BST (UK) »
The 1850 parish record for my g g g grandfather Patrick McManus' wedding in England helpfully shows that his parents were John McManus and Brigette Downe of Newtownholme Co Sligo. I understand that Newtownholme is a township in Sligo town itself. I'm not sure how possible it is to try and trace them, their marriage etc. If anyone has any advice etc I would be most grateful.

Hello,

I can't find much at all about Newtownholmes but hopefully someone will come along who can!
If it is near Sligo town - it will be Calry Civil Parish. There is reference to a Newtown Anderson Town in that parish.
If the family were Catholic, the parish would be Sligo St Mary, Coolera - see here.

Griffiths Valuation has the name Downes but not McManus in that parish.

Here are some tips for you:

My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

apparently there's a Newtownholmes Rd. south of Sligo town, in the townland of Caltragh - just not seeing it on modern or historic maps at the moment..

found the road on the modern map - it's on the eastern edge of the townland...

For some reason that wouldn't open Shane, but I have seen an advert for property for sale on Caltragh Road Newtownholmes. That map seems to show the two roads as continuations of each other.

Thanks Guys

I'd emailed the Sligo tourist office and they said that it was in Caltragh and I was able to find it using the google map. Using google the only hit I'd been able to get was excavations.ei saying that nothing of archaeological significance had been found on the site of a proposed car park on Newtownholmes Road - which sounds about right for my lot. Apart form the car park it looks to be a rural area now.

Thanks for the links I'll work through them and hopefully get lucky.

Newtownholmes is an 'area', Im not even sure if its a 'townland', on the outskirts of Sligo town.  Its a residential area now, but back in the 1870's it would have been on the main thoroughfare to Sligo from the south.
