searching the adams tree in Devon
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 21:56 BST (UK) »
I am new to this and am searching my paternal side of the family which I know to originate in Devon.  My father is William Adams born 1932 in Swansea, South Wales.  His father was William Adams, not sure if he was born in Swansea or Barnstaple but his father was born in Barnstaple, so he would be my great grandfather.  I have found a Samuel Adams and a George Adams and I know that my grandfather or my great grandfather was a William George which makes me think this is a connection.  Am completely new to this but have read ongoing chat about the adams family which I think I may be connected to in some way.  Can anyone help or give me some advice as to where to go.  Thanks.

Hi and welcome

Your best starting point is a copy of your grandparents marriage cert

Marriages December qtr 1929
William G Adams/Elizabeth Barry  Swansea  11a 2035

This will give you Williams's age when he married plus his fathers name and occupation

There are a number of William George Adams births in Wales and Devon so we need to narrow it down.

With that information - you can check the 1911 census for him

Do you know when and where your grandfather died as his birthyear will be on his death registration

Thanks for your help.  He died in Swansea in the 1970's.  I'll have to ask my father the exact year.  Its all very hazy as my father has parkinsons dementia and is quite unreliable with dates.

Hi

I have checked deaths 1965-1980 but the only one with a G is William Charles G in 1976 Swansea

A William George Adams died Swansea 1985 - birth 22.7.1902 but there are no other matches with a middle name/initial of George

The birth could be this one

Births September qtr 1902

William George Adams    Swansea  11a 1138

Is this one too early?

William George ADAMS - born 23 Sep 1895 - died Mar Q 1970.  (Swansea 8b 394)

Possible corresponding birth registration: Dec Q 1895 (Swansea 11a 915)

If it's the right one, he seems to be with his older sister and widowed mother in Swansea on the 1901 census, which isn't much help!  (No obvious Devon connection.  :( )

I think the william george adams I am looking for was born 22.7.1902 and died in 1985.  Thanks everyone for helping me, I,m new and useless to this.  I don't even know how to check the census.  I think it was his father who was born in Devon, but I must have to get hold of William george Adams birth certificate to get his fathers name.  Regards.  Caire

The free 1911 index has a William G Adams aged 8 living in Swansea

Using the instructions below shows parents as William and Margaret

The free 1911 index on Genes Reunited shows William's birthplace as Swansea

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

The 1911 census is strictly pay per view so you will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same surname in the same household

Hi

I would go with my first suggestion - the marriage cert for William & Elizabeth as that will establish his fathers christian name

I have just tried to trace William senior b Swansea 1882 back on the 1891 and there are 2 possibles - neither of whom have a father b Barnstaple

The likeliest because of the middle initial is William G Adams b Swansea aged 7 in 1891.  His father was Robert who was born in Germany

The other is just William aged 7 b Swansea father also William b Swansea
