Margaret Belle Ferguson Renton
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking to trace any details regarding a Margaret Belle Ferguson Renton. Her daughter was put up for adoption in 1939. The child,  Marilyn Ferguson Renton or Marilyn Renton (dob 28/09/39) had her birth  registered 1/11/39 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. I have the child's birth certificate. What I can't find is any trace of her Mother Margaret (birth. marriage etc). On the birth certificate it states Margaret's address as Rooktree Farm, Down Ampney, Cirencester. I'm now wondering if she was actually not from England or Wales at all.

Thankyou

Jo

Hi Jo,

This is quite a difficult one to find as there is nothing exact in the birth registers.  I have found an entry that might be her mother but I cannot tie it in with a marriage.

Margaret Bell Ferguson born 4/1889 reg. Bolton Lancs vol 8c page 442.

There is a marriage for Margaret B F Renton to Frederick H Greenhill 4/1948 Evesham vol 9d page 279 which might be her.

A death entry for Frederick Hubert Greenhill Oct 1985 born 4.2.1904 reg. Worcester.  This may be her husband or may be not, difficult to  be sure as there does not appear to be a death for Margaret B F Greenhill, only Margaret and no initials.

Just checked the birth registration for her daughter and it states Marelyn Renton 4/1939 Cirencester, mother's maiden name Ferguson, so does it mean that Margaret was 50 when she had her.  I can find no marriage between a Margaret Ferguson and anyone called Renton.  It may have been Marelyn's father's name and she just assumed it.

Perhaps obtaining the marriage cert for Margaret B F Renton to Frederick H  Greenhill will hold the answer.

All the best with it anyway.

Well spotted Suz. Obviously the same person.

An unusual combination of names, so surely there must be some connection don't you think.

Renton and Ferguson suggest a Scottish link?

Scotlandspeople records a "Margaret B Ferg Renton" born 1920 in Yetholm district. The full record is too recent to be viewed online.

Hi Imber,

That one sounds to be more likely with a birth year of 1920.  I thought the Fergusson would be Scottish but was not sure about Renton as that seemed to have a greater presence in the North of England.

It looks as though Joanna has gone to ground as she has not been on the site since 4 September.  If she does come back at least she will know where to start looking.

The parents of Margaret Bell Ferguson Renton born in 1920 are Alexander Renton and Margaret Bell Ferguson. Margaret's sister Elizabeth Woodcock Renton was married in Cirencester in 1937. There is a public tree on Ancestry which also includes a photo of Margaret.

Hi Jo,

It seems you are talking about my Aunt, Margaret Bell Ferguson Renton. She was born about 1920. Her parents were Alexander & Margaret Ferguson Renton, both deceased and both from Scotland. My Mother, Elizabeth was Margeret's sister. My sisters and brother and I had never heard that our Aunt had a baby before she was married so this is a surprise to us. Of course things back then were kept secret. I did not stay in touch with my Aunt and have been trying to contact her, I am not sure sure if she is still living. I understand that she married a Frederick Hooper-Greenhill in 1948. They had two children who may live in Wiltshire. What happened to Marilyn? I would like to be put in touch with her.
Thanks, Julia
