it is really hard to find uncommon names on there, because you cant do a wildcard search. You can only search by a name and whatever variations they have entered, which means I have lots of gaps in one particular family because the name is so often mistranscribed.
Anderson & Marr - Midlothian & East Lothian
Bennett - Devonport
Catleugh & Shiells - East Lothian
Galvin, McLaren, Cullen & Dowling - Waterford, Ireland
Littlejohns - Plymouth & London
Mansfield - Benfleet & St Pancras
Michelin - London
Newlands - Midlothian & Fife
Paterson - Canongate, Midlothian
Rutherford and Johnston - Roxburghshire
Taylor - East Lothian & Berwickshire
Thomson - Leith & Muthill
Thorney, Hawkin, Lewis - Herefordshire
Small & Paulin - Northumberland
Varrall - Kent

Are these CofI or RC baptisms ?

CofI baptisms dont usually include mother's maiden name, so a maiden surname search will not work for these.

That said I have had problems with maiden name searches for RC baptism searches at times using the free index - so maybe there's a problem in the main search also.

Have you tried narrowing down the search to one parish to see if the result still show up ?

Hi Shane & Annie:  Just wondering if you would mind doing a search on John Costin and Catherine Power marriage in the Diocese of Lissmore in 1791.  A further source has the marriage at:  "I am looking for information for Catherine Power and John Costin married in Clomel Tipperary, Ireland 7/3/1791.
They were born about 1760 and immigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada after 1792"
John COSTIN was born in 1760 in Dungarvan, Co Waterford Ireland. He died on 19 Feb 1843 Prince Edward Island. He is buried in St. Joachim’s R.C. Church, Vernon River Cemetery PEI.

John married Catherine POWER in 1791 in Dioceses of Waterford And Lismore Ireland-Reel 0100872. Catherine was born in 1766. She died in 1842 and is buried at St. Joachim’s R.C. Church Vernon River, PEI, Canada.

I am trying to find out the parents of either John Costin or Catherine Power.

COSTINS of DUNGARVAN, Co. WATERFORD
Costin is an uncommon name, even in Ireland, but is current in the Waterford area.  John Costin was a relation of a well known Father Costin of Ardmore, Co. Waterford.  The family emigrated from Dungarvan prior to 1796.  The 'Costin' family is not to be confused with the 'Costain' family of West PEI.  They are a family with origins on the Isle of Man.  When Michael Costin relocated his family from Pownel to Tignish, he sometimes spelled the name Costain to assimilate.

The present parish church, which, for a century, has served the purpose of a Cathedral, is in some respects the most remarkable ecclesiastical structure in Ireland. It was erected while yet the Penal Laws hung as lead around the neck of suffering Ireland ...

Also wondering if somebody may know the first name foro Father Costin and who his parents were.  He had a sister named Catherine married to either a Burke or Sheehy according to article above.

Thank you for any help that you may be able to offer.

....a search on John Costin and Catherine Power marriage in the Diocese of Lissmore in 1791.

...They were born about 1760 and immigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada after 1792"

John COSTIN was born in 1760 in Dungarvan, Co Waterford Ireland...

John married Catherine POWER in 1791 in Dioceses of Waterford And Lismore Ireland-Reel 0100872. Catherine was born in 1766.
....

that LDS film refers to an index of marriage licenses - the original documentation no longer exists. In the context of these licenses the Diocese of 'Lismore & Waterford' relates to the Church of Ireland Diocese and covered quite a wide area including all Co. Waterford and parts of Co. Tipperary... so quite a number of parishes.

I presume your Costin/Power family were RC ?

Few RC parishes have records back before 1830, and marriages for Dungarvan parish go back to about 1808. RootsIreland appear to only have transcripts of marriages for this parish back to 1829 or so, baptisms back to 1787.

The free Index on RootsIreland is showing a John Costin marriage somewhere in 'Co. Waterford' in 1891 - but definitely not Dungarvan RC or CofI.

A marriage from this timeframe will probably not include any family details like father's name.

marriage is listed under Clonmel, Church of Ireland. The transcript may give a few more details - but early records like this are often have very basic information - so all you might see is the date of marriage and the two names.

just before the reference to the letter in that document, the text mentions the following :

"....Rev. Michael Rourke. translated from Carrickbeg, succeeded;
he survived till February, 1857. ..... In connexion with Father Rourke,
his nephew, Rev. Patrick Costin, who dwelt with him as curate deserves
notice. Father Costin spent practically his whole clerical life as curate
of Portlaw
....."

both Rev. Michael Rourke P.P. and Curate Patrick Costin are listed as Portlaw RC parish in the ecclesiastical directory for 1848.

He appears in the 1856 listing, again as a curate in Porlaw, as Patrick Costen, but no sign of him in the 1858 listing, so possibly dies sometime around then ?

Shane

Hi Shane:  Thanks for all your help and yes all my Irish family were RC.  I found some more information on Father Michael Rourke, still trying to find the link to the Costin relationship:

Accidentally I found the Priest's obit. in a NY Genweb site. who Baptized some of my people, oneday. Here it is for Rev. Michael Rouke..The date was :14 Mar 1857, Waterford Ireland..
Waterford -
"The Rev. Michael ROURKE, pastor of Portlaw, died on the 11th ult., after a prolonged illness, at the patriarchal age of 94, over 60 years of which he spent in the sacred ministry. (making him born about 1763)

A plaque near the fourth station commemorates Fr. Patrick Costin who died in March 1875 aged 86 years and 60 years of his sacred ministry.  A little framed photograph of him used hang on the wall beside the plaque.  A brass plaque over the holy water font at the church door is in memory of 'his deceased parents' and presented by Mr Patrick O'Brien of Boston in 1914.  The well-known Mrs Barry nee Dwyer who dominated the Cliff for so many years, donated the Stations of the Cross.

It is remarkable that two priests of the parish died not alone in the same year 1875 but in the same month i.e. Fr. Patrick Wall and Fr. Patrick Costin (plaque near the fourth station already referred to). Fr. Galvin P.P. and Fr. Wall P.P. are both buried at the west side.  Fr. Meehan died 1978 and Fr. Cahill 1975 are at the eastern side.

I will try to do a search on Catherine Costin Burke or Sheehy, as she was a sister to the Curate, Patrick Costin.  Thanks for all your help.
