Hi Helena

Is it the same Elizabeth that appears on the 1861 census?
RG 9; Piece: 3946; Folio: 73; Page: 40
 Quay Street, St Bees, Whitehaven

Patrick Gilmore   59  Lab general       Ireland
Elizabeth Gilmore   50                         Ireland
Elizabeth Gilmore   19  Coal gatherer    Whitehaven
Esther Gilmore   17  Coal gatherer    Whitehaven
Sarah Ellen Gilmore15 Coal gatherer    Whitehaven
Margaret Gilmore   10                        Whitehaven
Hannah Gilmore   6                          Whitehaven

If so, you will need probably to look on Irish records for her parents.

Gilmore and Gilmour are interchangeable- just depends who was writing the name down at the time so do not be concerned with spelling.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi

I can't see a marriage that fits on Free bmd even though the first child on 1861 in born in Whitehaven.

Tends too confirm you need to look for a marriage in Ireland - though there could still be some marriages missing from Free bmd.

Best wishes

i

In 1841 they are at Strand St Whitehaven, which Quay St is close to.

They have Mary Jane and Thomas, 8 and 6 years and James 4 as well as Elizabeth.

No occupation given.

The parents and Mary Jane and Thomas all have a cross in the right hand column for birth place with what is probably an I beside outside the grid.

If this is a first marriage and it was before the first child was born thenthey were married before registration started in this country.  So it looks like we need parish records either side of the Irish Sea!

Best wishes

Hi again

In 1851 Elizabeth is on her own with the children.  She's down as mariner's wife and it looks like pauper written faintly beside that.  She's again just down as born Ireland.

She has mary 15, Thomas 14, James 12, Elizabeth 9, Esther 7, sarah E 5, Patrick 4 and Margaret 4 or 1?

Thank you Emms for your reply it does seem a tricky one has I have no idea where in Ireland to look, I am meeting up with someone tomorrow with the same lady in her Ancestry so we will compare notes and I will let you know if we find anything.  Yes I think you are correct when you say they look like paupers as 1 child is a coal picker at 18!!  Some look ups are easy but some are just to hard to tackle,
many thanks I will be in touch later

Thanks for the feedback Helena

I'll be interested to know how you get on.

Of course one thing you could do would be to look for a birth certificate for one of the children born in Whitehaven and get Elizabeth's maiden name from there.

there are baptism registers in the record office but I think only the RC ones will give maiden name and I've a feeling the ones for this date are still at the church even if that is their religion.

Good luck with the meeting.

Best wishes
