It just occurred to me why I never found it - the census I was looking at is ENGLAND, not Scotland! Doh!!  :-[
I can only get 1881 and (at the moment) 1911 for free, so have to rely on helpful peeps like yourselves!

Sorry if I've mis-read any of the messages, but did Gertrude not marry at all then?

If what you've found is right, then Basil's blood half-brother only died shortly after him. Basil passed away in Scarborough in May 2004.
My father-in-law never really got on with his Dad, Basil - apparently he was quite a violent man and my dad-in-law was not at all sorry about his passing as he'd not seen him at all since he was about 18.
I'm not even sure how my dad-in-law feels about me chasing his blood roots, rather than the adopted ones - but I'd like to know a bit more about the family name that would've been mine if Gertrude hadn't given Basil up for adoption....

1911 free index

search for Ella B Billon b 1876 resident in Scarborough

search for Miriam Bilton b 1899 Edinburgh in Essex.

Getting a bit tired and my knees are a bit hot from the laptop.....if you want I will get the other census details to you over the weekend.

yes doran - loads of info online about the family and the Nottingham connection ( thanks to you ).

So although Ella put them in the school she obviously kept in touch and they all seemed to have set up home in the same area

Thanks so much - I have so much to look into - but tomorrow, as you say Nesta!

I can't believe you found Ella in Scarborough - if you saw my other post, that is where Basil died!!
Hallelujiah, have you both fixed it for me??

This does make me wonder though - if Basil went back to Scarborough because of the Bilton connection, did he have contact with his blood relatives???? I'll never know now.....
