Kells Family in Kells County Meath
« on: Thursday 30 August 12 23:50 BST (UK) »
Hi, my great grandfather came from Kells county Meath and his last name was Kells. The name was not changed when he came over to Canada it  was and remains Kells. Since,Kells is the name of the town my ancestors must have had some connection to the founding of the town or at least have been highly prominent members in the town I figure. Can anyone give me any incite to this last name in the town from historical records or knowledge? Your help is most appreciated!

PS: I tried contacting the heritage center of the town but I found out it was closed down.

You could try contacting the Meath heritage centre, high street, Trim, Co. Meath. They may be able to help you

Hi Tanman,
I was just wondering how sure that your gt grandfather came from Kells, Meath. The reason I ask is that Kells is prominently an Ulster surname, for example if you search under the 1901 census the vast majority are from Ulster, with the those that are outside Ulster mainly in Dublin. There are only 2 male Kells in County Meath in the village of Oldcastle. If your information is from the shipping records could it be possible a) that he was from Kells, County Meath and because his name was difficult to pronounce or for some other reason gave the name Kells or b) Could it be that the enumerator copied the name or town twice in error. So I guess my question is do you have a record of your gt grandfather in Kells, Meath with the name Kells?
By the way there is also a Kells in County Antrim.
Good Luck
