How do I go about finding more information about a WW1 soldier please?
« on: Wednesday 29 August 12 17:19 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I'm tracing my godfathers family and have found a solider who was killed in WW1. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to where I can find more information about him, e.g. where he fought, how he was killed, any other info etc.

His name was Charles Henry Mulleague, he was born in Huddersfield to John Mulleague and Julia Ann (nee Hynes)

He served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (1st Battalion). He enlisted in Richmond and was living in Burnley at the time of enlistment.

He was a Private and his number was 8886. I believe he was killed in action on the 19th June 1915 in Flanders, France.

His name is remembered on the Menin Gate, Ypres.

His medal card stated he he qualified on 27.8.14.  I think he gained the Victory, British and 14 Star medals (well there are numbers written in the columns next to them so I assume he was awarded them!)

In the action taken box there is another word written but I can't make it out (it looks like blaspsfsbog?) and then it says died.

His brother, James Hubert Mulleague, born in Huddersfield to 1888, also served in WW1, he survived, but I would also like any further informations about him.  His medal card states he fought with the West Riding Regiment (no. 8855) and the Labour Corps. (no. 670505). He gained the Victory and the British Medals (I think!)

Is there further information I can find or is the above the most I'll find? If there is more where do I look?

Thank you in anticipation

Check Ancestry WW1 service records if you can theres John H s record but doesnt look like Charles survived I think there is another Huddersfield Mulleague record there too.
Edit: Looking at the records they are all his brother JH s who was also a pre war regular with 2nd West Ridings so they both were over in Belgium at the beginning of war as part of British Expeditionary Force

By the look of his number Charles was a pre war regular soldier.

That word is probably Clasp and Roses which were issued with 1914 star if the soldier was under fire from Aug-Nov 1914

Thank you Ady,

I will have another look and see if it looks like Clasp and Roses!

Charles definitely didn't survive the war, he died in 1915 at Flanders.

John H is actually my godfathers great granddad so it'd be great to see his record. However, I'm not sure we can access the ancestry info with out paying and being on maternity leave at the mo I can't really afford to shell out for credits.

I did find a J Mulleague's medal card also, but I cannot place a J Mulleague with the census returns and BMD's

Thanks again.

Hi Legs
Yes it just says Clasp with the index number...It may not have been sent to the Next Of Kin as no issue date on the card.

Ref JH and J they are both the same person one is for the 1914 Star the other for British War and Victory Medals.

If (When) You get to see the record it says JH served as 10021 as well as the 8855 and 60751 Labour Corps so not a different person!
Lived Castlegate Huddersfield JH enlisted 1910

You can sign up for a free 2weeks trial on ancestry but you need to remember to cancel within period or get billed for the month.
Its also free at most libraries
