Help please with the Wills family from Farlam and Brampton area
« on: Wednesday 29 August 12 17:10 BST (UK) »
Hello, I would like some help with part of a family tree belonging to my fathering law, his family come from the Farlam and Brampton area of Cumberlabnnd.
We dont know much about them. Whilst looking on the census for his grand father Fredrick Wills (Birth 1883) we found that he is living with his uncles in 1891 in Farlam, we have his birth certificate which says his parents are Jonathan and Jane Wills, the really confusing thing is we found who we think is jonathan but hes married to a margret, so any help with this family would be greatlly appreciated. I would like to know more about the Wills and how come Fred was with his uncles.
Thankyou
Laura

Hi Laura,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

This could be Frederick's family on the 1881 -

Jonathan Wills 28 b. Farlam, Cumberland Miner
Jane Wills 26 b. Stapleton, Cumberland
Mary Elizb. Wills 3 b. Denton Nr, Cumberland
Margaret J. Wills 1 b.Denton Nr, Cumberland

Living at Highfield, Brampton

There is a death of a Jane Wills in 1888, Brampton, Vol 10b Page 274

So that could account for Frederick being with his uncles in 1891

Was Jane's maiden name Moses?

Hello, JJ, thankyou for that information, on the census, they mach the ones that my fathering law found :-) , could I ask do you know were I would find where they would be buried and information on what happend to Jane? as I found Jonathan on the 1911 census and it says he married to a person called Margaret for 35 years, which has completely confused me as that means that he would have been married to Jane and Margret at the same time.
Thankyou
Laura

Hi Laura,

There is a death of a Jane Wills in 1888, Brampton, Vol 10b Page 274, who could be Jonathan's wife, but the only way to actually establish this would be to purchase the death certificate. Equally you could post another request on the board for a look up of the burial. Unfortunately the NBI disc I have only covers deaths up to 1839 for the Brampton area  ???

I could be wrong but I think that Jonathan and Margaret were not married. In 1891 Jonathon is a widower with a servant called Margaret, this lady could very well be the Margaret who is shown on later census as being his wife but there does not appear to a record of their marriage.

1901 -

Jonathan Wills 38
Mary E Wills 13
John J Wills 6
Frances Wills 4
Margaret Hunter servant 31

There is a gravestone at St Thomas a Becket Church, Farlam which reads:

In loving memory of James, son of Jonathan and Mary Wills who died at Coalfell on 11 July 1862 aged 2 years and five months. Also of Elizabeth granddaughter of the above born 12 January 1863, died 19 January 1866. Also the above Mary who died 29 February 1888 aged 73. Also the above named Jonathan who died at Coalfell on 21 January 1891, aged 71 [could be aged 77, very difficult to read].
Will post this on other thread, Brampton Graveyard, to tidy up the post.
