http://www.awm.gov.au/research/people/nominal_rolls/first_world_war/ and this http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/NameSearchForm.aspx and you can look in newspapers here http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper.

I have found two daughters so far for John and Mary.
Mary Ann ROBINSON born on the 14th October 1865 in Burra and Margaret ROBINSON born 1867 in Burra.

I hope that this helps.  ;)

With a common name you need to post his place of birth and approximate age to help people look for his records. But only about one third survive. Most official records use their alternative name of Royal Highlanders. 80 men of that name served with them during WW1.

Here is a link to them in WW1 - http://www.1914-1918.net/blackwatch.htm

Also, if he travelled to the UK to enlist have you looked for him in the passenger lists?

Is it possible that your John Robertson was in the Australian 42nd Battalion which became known as the Australian Black Watch through having the same number as "The Gallant Forty Twa" the association with  the number 42,   they had their own pipe band.
The 42nd Bn. was part of the 11th Brigade 3rd Australian Div. and arrived in France in Nov. 1916

Wow! Thankyou everyone for your quick responses. Definately will look at these websites for clues. Yes, Mary Ann and Margaret are his daughters. Not sure if there were any other children. My Uncle told me John was buried in pauper's grave at Cheltenham cemetery in Adelaide SA. His wife  Mary Ann was buried in Catholic cemetery, Woodville SA in 1915. (listed as 82years old). That means John must have been in Army earlier than WW1 otherwise he would be too old??!!
Anyway, I'm off to check for clues.
Thanks again,
Deb
