Inquest hearing 1864

Hi all,

 I am trying to find if there was an inquest held for Alice May born 1847 Woodham Ferris and
died 24/4/ 1864 Witham.

Death certicicate states death by being burnt.   She may have been a schoolmistress, place of death looks like Southbourne.

If anyone can help or make suggestions,  I would be grateful.

Hi,

Her death certificate should show if there was an Inquest;  it will be in the section "Signature, description and residence of Informant".  It will give the name of the Coroner and the date of the Inquest.

Even if there was an inquest it is unlikely that the records still exist

You might do better looking for a newspaper report

Death certificate names her father as the informant.  He was a Police Inspector at Witham.

As her father was the informant there was no Inquest.

Alice was buried on 28 April 1867, aged 17 years, at Holy Trinity church, Springfield, Essex.

WITHAM

A very sad and fatal accident happened on Wednesday evening last to Miss May,schoolmistress of the village school at Faulkbourne. It appears that a young female friend who resided with Miss May was unwell,and on the evening in question the latter was preparing tea,when by some means the back part of her dress caught fire,and she was soon enveloped in flames. She immediately ran downstairs into the garden,where help was obtained,but before the flames could be extinguished all her clothes were burnt off her. Medical assistance was soon procured but her injuries were so severe that after suffering great pain she expired on Sunday morning last. The deceased was daughter of Mr. May,Superintendent of the Essex Constabulary at Chelmsford.  No inquest will be held,the Coroner not thinking it necessary as no blame can be imputed to any second person.
