Ancestor goes missing for ~20 years
« on: Sunday 26 August 12 21:38 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I am trying to find out documents regarding what happened to John WALL (b. ABT 1835 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England) from 1851 to 1871.  My 1851 entry shows John working for John MABYN in Bristol, England as an apprentice. While my 1871 entry shows John living in Ontario (most likely Chatham, Kent) with his wife Eliza Maria WINTER with their children. I have not been able to find any information regarding his immigration and marriage. Can someone please help me?
Thank you,
John

Hi John

I found this marriage in Kent  Co, Ontario - June 20, 1866

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/thisisit.htm

Put Wall/Winter in search box - find

This brings you to a new page.   The second one down Kent 1866, press and this brings up another page. Scroll down to No. 208

You will find the birth of some of the children in https://familysearch.org/

Hope this helps

Lil

Went to Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid

ocfa.islandnet.com/ found a death for John Wall buried at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Kent,Chatham.

Went onto another site and his stone is W400.

I think he died before 1910 as Eliza is on the 1910 US Census along with some of the children and it indicates she is a widow. This info on A******ry.

Lilybell,
Thank you! That seems like a likely match for my ancestor.

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html

1881 and 1891 Census of Canada are available

You can view transcriptions as well as the original documents

1881
Ontario
District Name - Kent
District # 180
Page 52 and 53

Just fill in Wall plus the info above and it will take you to the family

1891
Ontario
District Name - Kent
Dsitrict Number 79

Again just fill in Wall plus the info above and it will take you to the family

You can check the 1901 and 1911 census for free at
http://automatedgenealogy.com

I didn't look for the family there using the names of the children you may find the family members listed. You can view the transcribed records or view the originals using the split screen/view option.

Hi Valeriec,
Thank you for your reply, but I am mainly looking for records that date between 1851 and 1871. Outside of that, I have information regarding his birth and now marriage and death. Additionally, I have found him listed in the 1841 and 1851 England Censuses along with the 1881 and 1891 Canada Censuses.

There is something about a "but" that seems to negate all previous thanks..... if you  follow the 1901 census link given you by valerie the image might have an approximate date of entry to Canada....
also note that valerie gave you a whole list of places to search within that link, such as passenger lists to Canada
