Denis BENNETT and Hannah HANLON
« on: Friday 24 August 12 04:07 BST (UK) »
My 2x great grandfather, Francis BENNETT, was apparently born in Ireland in about 1835 plus or minus 5 years, depending on what certificate or census data is viewed.  I would love to know where in Ireland he was from.  His father was Denis BENNETT and mother Hannah HENLEY or HANLAN.

I have him in the 1841 census with his family as a 9 year-old in Liverpool.  I think I have him in 1851, listed as Frank BENNETT, as a 19 year-old lodger (although this one says he was born in Liverpool).  He can’t be found in 1861,  and by 1868 he is in Australia getting married at Ballarat.  I don’t know when he arrived in Austalia.

His siblings are Bernard, Michael, John, Patrick and James. Patrick and James were born in Liverpool (abt 1844 and 1849), the others in Ireland.

I don’t know where to start looking in Ireland – I’ve always put it into the too hard basket.  Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Shelley

Twins John and Anthony were born to this couple and baptised in 1837.  The baptisms took place in the RC parish of Lower Killeavy, which is just west of Newry in the south of County Armagh.

My first reply to this went AWOL.

Thanks very much, Gaffy.  Now I have somewhere to start looking.

This matches up with birth year for John (about 1838 from censuses).  Anthony must have died as he doesn't appear with the family in 1841.

I've just found that my 3x great grandparents were in County Armagh (Lower Killeavy) in 1837 (see my previous post at http://www.rootschat.com/links/0qfl/.

They are Denis BENNETT and Hannah HANLON (maybe O'HANLON).  Can anyone tell me any more information about this family?   They may have married about 1830.  By 1841 they are in Liverpool with their children.

I am particularly interested in their son, Francis, born about 1832.

I'm interested to know - what town/s would be included in the parish of Lower Killeavy?

Hi,
There are several Bennett households in the Killevy Civil Parish just west of Newry in 1864 and the head of one household is called Denis. They are listed in the Griffiths Valuation. See http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Thanks very much kingskerswell for that information.  That is a great site!  I can see I will have to investigate it some more.
