Fidgeon - Essex
« on: Friday 24 August 12 18:31 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family on my father's side with the surname of Fidgeon - living in the Essex area and have been there as far as I can tell for a while.

I have got as far back as 1803 - Israel Fidgeon - married to a Mariah Wombwell - 4 children - one of which, James was my great great great grandfather.
His son Thomas was my great x 2 grandfather and his son Henry James was my great grandfather.

There are many families by the name of Fidgeon living in Essex at this time, they all seem to have come from the same line - Israel being the head. Of course he was also born at some time and I can't find his roots.

His son Israel was also a beer house keeper in Rayleigh - of a well-known pub at the time the elephant and castle (now does not exist) married to Emily

If anyone has any info or may be a distant relative, I'd love to hear from you!

Hi
We may not be related... but my maiden name is Womble and it seems to be a misspelling of Wombwell.  I've recently started digging again.   I will keep you in mind.
Womble - Notts/Dby
Stevenson - Staffordshire
Malpass - Staffordshire
Gallimore - Staffordshire
Bettany - Staffordshire
Aldridge - Staffordshire

1851 Census says he was born Rockford, I took this to be Rochford and found the following:
St Andrew's Church, baptized 2 December 1798 Israel son of Robert and Rose Fidging (beggars)

Are you giving 1803 as Israel's y.o.b.? Or have you taken that from the 1841 census??
The 1841 census is supposed to round down to the nearest 5 years  of adults 15yrs plus

Israel's age was given as 38 in 1841 and 50 in 1851
1851 census image gives p.o.b. as Rochford

Burial index gives his y.o.b. as approx 1799
Burial
18/11/1858
St Peter Anglican Thundersley Essex
Israel Fidgeon
age 59

so the baptism posted by amondg is a very strong possibility

you state Israel and Mariah had 4 children -
James, William, Emma & Israel -there was also a daughter Mary Ann who was age 8 on 1851 census

There is also this burial
15/05/1831
St Peter Anglican Thundersley Essex
Israel Fidgeon
age 2

wondered if he may have been Israel & Mariah's child

there is another Israel Fidgeon in the area b.c. 1821 he was in Rayleigh in 1841 with his mother Mary who was a beer House Keeper

Possibly this Israel is related to "your" Israel but he is definately not his son - so it seems "your" Israel isn't the head of the line in that area - think you will have to look further back

From Freebmd
Israel Fidgeon married Emily Willis 1859 Dunmow Registration District December Quarter 1859.
Based on census information and probate Israel born 1838/9 to Israel and Maria dies 1 March 1881 probate 3 May 1881 to Emily widow and relic.
1881 Census Emily is a beer house keeper, Elephant and Castle, Rayleigh Essex.
Children Herbert 21, Willie age 15, Emily 13, Frederic 11, Earnest 8, Arthur 7months, all born Thundersley except Arthur born Raleigh.
1871 Census Thundersley, there is a daughter Clara age 7. father Israel a sieve maker
It is possible the widow received help from Israel Fidgeon born 1821 Raleigh son of Christopher and Mary who married Sarah Ann, they had no children.
If Christopher Fidgeon of Rayleigh is related to Robert Fidgeon of Thundersley?

Index from EFHS
Removal Orders at Essex Record Office
Israel Fidgeon plus wife and 4 children removed from Thundersley to Rochford 1830. ref: 129/13/3
This backs up the baptism of Israel son of Robert and Rose at Rochford. He could not have stayed there long as he continued to have children baptized at Thundersley.
