Keppel family in Newmarket/Meelin 1850s
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 08:48 BST (UK) »
My paternal grandfather Maurice Keppel was baptised on 20 December 1855 in St Mary's Catholic Church in Newmarket.  His parents were John and Catherine nee Riordan.  Maurice emigrated to New Zealand in 1878 and his sister Julia and her husband James Halpin emigrated to New Zealand in 1877 with two children.

In 1882 Maurice married Annie O'Callaghan from Kiskeam.  Annie was born in 1860 and her parents were Cornelius and Julia nee Connor.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about the Keppel family.

Regards from Kiskeam in New Zealand.

Keppel O'Callaghan Riordan Harrington Dwyer Halpin O'Brien

I think the Keppel family is connected to the british royal family by marriage. Also one of the Millionaire winners was a Judith Keppel.

(...begging letters at the ready...)

Good luck

Hi Barbs

Todate I have little information about James Halpin.  I believe he was born in Newmarket County Cork in 1846. He married Julia in Kanturk County Cork on 12 November 1870.  I await a copy of that marriage certificate from the Office of the Registrar General, Roscommon, Ireland.  I understand the turn round from the Office is about six months so I might be waiting until February 2006.  I shall come back to you if the certificate of marriage reveals details of parents, or I trace James death details and obtain a death certificate

Hi Mikehicks
The British Royal Family connection is to the Dutch family of Van Keppel which can be traced back to Wolten Van Keppel who was born in 1179.  In 1670 Arnold Joot Van Keppel was born and King William 111 created the earldom of Albemamarle for him in 1697.  The present day Royal connection traces back to Alice Edmonstone who married the Hon. George Keppel who was the third son of the 7th Earl of Albemarle, whose family had many British Naval connections.  Whilst that Keppel family's history is well documented the Irish families are not, so the search goes on, somebody somewhere must have the information.  I live in hope!!

Today I received a copy of the marriage certificate from www.groireland  for Julia Keppel/le and James Halpin.  I am posting the information from that certificate in the hope that it may help in my search for information about the Keppel/le and Halpin families.

Julia and James were single when they were married at the Catholic Chapel in Meelin on 14 November 1869 by the Reverend Father C O Connell.  The witnesses were John Keppel and Cora Halpin. James occupation was cooper.

Julia was living in Tooreenacopogue and James in Meelin.  Julia's father was John Kepple a farmer and James's father was Denis Halpin a farmer.

Hi there.
I have been trying to research my family history for some time now and have found that I am not very good at it but I just stubbled on this and it gives me hope.
Maurice and Annie Keppel are my great great grandparents. Their daughter Catherine married Martin Harrington who had a son, Maurice William Harrington who was my grandfather.
Any information you could give me or if you could point me in the right direction I would be most greatful.
