Woops ~ very sorry, that will teach me (again) to read in full before I write. Still it at least discounts one line of research.

There is only one Mary Evan(s) baptized at Ambleston from 1831 to 1857, that of the details supplied.

There is no William Evan(s) mrd at Ambleston between 1790, when William Evans mrd Mary Llewellyn, upto the baptism of Mary in 1837.

My antique non-index’d personal copy of the ‘61 of Ambleston shows ;
William Evans Farmer aged 60 born Trefgarne, his wife Margaret aged 53 born Hayscastle with Sarah 22 and Elizabeth 14.
Try as I might I can not find a mrge of William Evan(s) to a Margaret that makes a good fit.

Does this redeem me a little, in my ’61
Quarry Duon Ambleston
William Evan aged 59 Farmer his wife Eliza aged 56 Anne aged 20 John aged 16 and Sarah aged 12, all say born Ambleston.

William Evan a Servant mrd Eliza Williams at Hayscastle 17 Jul 1836.

The last bit there I think matches the William John and Mary Evans I'm looking for, based on the father's name and residence, Quarry Duon.  I wonder if they owned that place, or more likely were servants/farm hands working for someone who owned that land?

By 1861 she would have already moved out and married William John, but at least I have some names to work with now, which I can hopefully use to place her in the 1851 census and get her rough age.

There does not appear to be a location called Quarry Duon in Ambleston in my antique ’41, nor does there appear to be a William & Eliza Evans residing in the village.

So I turned to my very very poor copy of the ’41 of Hayscastle
Brynyrhavod Hayscastle
William Evan aged 25 an Ag Lab wife Eliza aged 26 Mary aged 4 and Hannah aged 2 of born in county.

There is a Mary Evan baptized at Hayscastle in 1836, parents currently unknown.

This sounds about right then.  I do wonder who owned Quarry Duon and where the name comes from (Cware Duon = Black Quarry?).  I wonder if William Evan owned the place, or was living on someone's land and working as a farmer there.  I notice that these days Cware Duon is owned by a former MP.

I think the hayscastle one is a red herring.   It looks like they're from Spittal originally based on the 1851 census which shows William and Eliza already living at quarry duon.  Mary has already left the family home by 1851, so I will still have to locate the 1841 census to find her living at home, but at least I know where to look for them now.

I’m not quite sure I follow you as to why exactly Wm & Eliza are not the parents required? I could not find the Quarry listed in my old 1841 nor any Wm & Eliza at Ambleston in 1841, so could Wm & Eliza not have moved from Hayscastle to Ambleston between 1841 and 1851? It appears substantial that Mary baptized at Hayscastle to Wm & Eliza is part of the family that later live at the Quarry in Ambleston.
Mary may well not be with the family in 1851, she is aged at least 15 yrs and therefore quite lightly away in domestic service of some kind.

Oh well, I appear to have mislead you sufficiently, so will leave it to you. If you require any checks of original P.R.’s done at the R.O. (make it soon before it closes down) just let me know, I will stick it on my own ‘to do’ list.

They are indeed a close match, and I was inclined to believe it until I saw the 1851 census which listed William and Eliza Evans at Quarryduon, and lists the births of the children at Spittal:

1851:

William Evans   48
Eliza Evans   45
Morris Evans   12, Spittal
Anne Evans   10, Spittal
James Evans   8, Spittal
John Evans   6, Ambleston
Sarah Evans   2, Ambleston

Mary is already living away from home by then.

From this I began looking for them in Spittal 1841 and got:

William Evans   38
Eliza Evans   35
Arnold Evans   10
Mary Evans   8
Martha Evans   6
Morris Evans   4
Anne Evans   3/4 of a year old

But thank you for your help, as you did indeed point me in the right direction!
