William John 1857 Ambleston marriage
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 16:12 BST (UK) »
Could someone look up the record for William John, marrying in 1857, Ambleston, Pembrokeshire?

I have a feeling he marries Mary Evans.  If that's the case, could you also provide me with information on Mary Evan's baptism?   I'm guessing she is baptised around 1835 but want to be sure.   I would also expect a William John to be born in Ambleston in 1858 to these two.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Hi

There are 6 marriages for that name in Pembrokeshire in 1857 - 3 of which were in Haverfordwest which is the RD for Ambleston

Can you please include details of the quarter for the one you are interested in as one entry also has a Mary Williams on the same page?

Also - to lookup a marriage in parish records - you need to know the name of the church they married in

Mary Evans is a very common name - where was she born?

Unfortunately I know very little here as William John is a very common name.  All I have confirmed so far is that William John, born 1824 in Bettws, marries a Mary (born ~1835) from Ambleston, and that they have a son, William John, in 1858, also born in Ambleston.  This all comes from census records from their time in Maesteg and other parts of Glamorganshire.

Perhaps if I start with the William John born 1858 in Ambleston, and work backwards from there?

Mary Evans was just a guess based on the little information I'd seen from Ambleston, but it sounds like I could be completely wrong.

This is a definite possibility - William John snr was a mining inspector by the time he lived in Maesteg, so it would add up.  Sadly there are many William John's, and many of those were involved in coal mining.

I just noticed this, This ties in with the information I had n William John already, e.g. a miner from Bettwys, and also connects with the Jenkin John information provided by an earlier lookup in Glamorganshire.  Glad to see I'm on the right track.

Mary Evans baptized 19 Nov 1837 at Ambelston the dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Evans.

There is a query over parents as the 1871 shows mother as Rebecca Evans, with both residing at Spittal.

I note a Thomas Evan of Castlebigh(Castlebythe) mrd Rebeka Griffith at Ambleston 14 Jul 1814.

There is no mrge of a Thomas Evans at Ambleston to fit your requirements, however there is a mrge of a Thomas Evans Farmer who mrd Elizabeth Mathias a widow at Spittal 06 Feb 1835.

A search of my antique none index’d original, in 1841 at Wallis, Ambleston I note a Rebekah Evans aged 48 resides with Mary aged 7 and Eliza aged 7. Which given the notorious inaccuracy of ages in 1841, still makes this Mary somewhat to old to be yours.
I also note at Sullock Cross Ambleston a Thomas Evans aged 39 living with Rebeckah and Sarah Evans, but alas no Mary.

The following is the most lightly for your requirements in 1841 at Bigins Park Ambleston, Thomas aged 46 and Elizabeth aged 40 with their children John aged 5 Mary aged 4 and Thomas aged 1 yr.

Perhaps others can follow this family in later census

It's interesting to note that Mary Evans marriage shows William (presumably Evans) as her father.  Perhaps she's not baptised in Ambleston, but nearby? Are there any Mary Evans with a father of William in the baptisms from around 1837?
