Morrison / Dowling
« on: Tuesday 21 August 12 00:31 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can help. Have information given to me by a cousin for a marriage on 19th December 1855 at St Gregory's Roman Catholic Church Queanbeyan between  Elizabeth Dowling and James Morrison. Can't find any record in NSW BDM and would dearly love to get a copy of this record. Does anyone know where I can enquire to get this or find out more ?

Hi Bikegirl,

It is possible that the marriage date and place came from one of their children's birth certificates.  You would need to ask your contacts where this information came from.

They may not have married, but records of many events did not make it to the registry.  This resource at the SAG might be of use to you:

Historical indexes of the Canberra/Queanbeyan district Vol 4 : parish registers & burial records / edited by Patricia M. Frei.

29: St Gregory's (catholic), Queanbeyan: baptisms 1843-1920; marriages 1843-1857, 1856-1898, 1881; burials 1844-1877, 1937-1967 (selective)

http://catalogue.sag.org.au/fullRecord.jsp?recnoListAttr=recnoList&recno=8731

Why were their children registered as MORRIS?

Perhaps Bikegirl can tell us the names of her James and Eliza's children, there may be two different families here.

There were thirteen children born to the Morrison couple with nine of them surviving.  The first eight children were born in the districts around Goulburn, Queanbeyan and  Braidwood.   None of the children were registered but the birthdates are taken from the records of the Catholic churches in the Braidwood area  (kindly supplied by the local
Catholic Parish priest).  As some of the children were born on the trek to Louth their birthdates are mainly estimated by place of birth.

James Frederick's Death Certificate gives his birth place as Wollondilly N.S.W. in 1828; family oral history makes him the son of a Scottish engineer.
It has been impossible to find confirmation of James' background.
Information given on the death certificate is incorrect; the children's ages, when checked against their marriage certificates are wrong.
The Birth Certificate for Amenda Jane (1872) gives James` age at 34 (ie. born in 1838) making his death at 83 (not 93 as stated

Children : Helena, Edward James, Mary, Twins - Emily and James, Louisa, Elizabeth, Robert, John, Edward William, Amenda and twins Alice and Thomas

We have very little on James and Elizabeth ( maybe they did change names - very confusing  :-\
