Where did he serve?

hi,,this chap ,according to his militia record,was residing at 5 Griffin street,Workington.

Regiment:Border Regiment - 34th & 55th Foot

was present from 1903-1907

the record also states he was a widower with 4 children.Next of kin mother  Margaret.

A previous militia record for what looks like the same man states he enlisted in 1892..was called by the regulars  East Lancashire regiment,,and served in South Africa from 1900-1902.

The question about Cheshire was because a man served 18 years in their Militia with the right year of birth. Unfortunately due to a fire the pages with his birth details has not survived. But you had to live in the county of the regiment, so you can discount him. The two enlistments found by Gortonboy look promising.

Thank you for all that, I found the earliest militia attestation last night with him living at 4 Griffin St.   I found it on Find my past, is the later one on there or did you find it somewhere else?   He certainly moved up and down Griffin St.  Thank you so much for all that help, I will now go back to the 1911 census and see if the place he mentions ties up in any way shape or form to a place which could call itself Newry!
