thanks Elwyn i this is one i use. do you know which combination of indexes to use to get best overall cover as it seems there is a lot of holes in the main indexes. so i was thinking if there was a way or search multi sites to get best results. or list of the best ones to use to get best overall results.

ps i searched for a patrick doyle the other day again on Irishroots.ie and got a this. but cant find this result on any other sites !

The BMD Index on FamilySearch covers civil records - so births, death & marriages from 1864, plus non-Catholic marriages from 1845.

Earlier records will be parish records not all of which survive for early dates, and it's also important to remember  that not all of those that do survive are available online. The two main clues you require to check for parish records are the denomination and the location - i.e. town, townland or parish.

That baptism you mentioned certainly seems to like it could fit, but you usually need to know a more detailed location than just the county - especially for a common surname like Doyle and records as early as 1820.

As I'm sure you've already seen, the pay-website at RootsIreland has transcripts of Co. Sligo records - but not very many of these go back before 1830.

This site will tell you what records survive for each RC parish in Co Sligo (and the rest of Ireland). So you’ll see where the gaps are.

I assume you have checked all the Scottish censuses in case one says specifically where he came from. Scottish Poor Law records can also be helpful, as they usually record the parish of origin in Ireland.

thanks everyone, Elwyn thank you for the link yes have got all Scottish censuses from 1851 to 1891 and some poor law records too, but all state Ireland or at best silgo Ireland. Michael is in the 1851 then disappear from then on. no death cert or other certs for him at all so bit of a mystery there, but that's another story.
