Old Barracks Fermoy
« on: Saturday 18 August 12 07:42 BST (UK) »
Hi there
We have traced my g grandfather to Old Barracks Fermoy in 1897 when he married my g grandmother. Can anyone tell me how we find out what regiment he was in and also where he might have been in 1901 as he was missing from the census. My mother remembers he had medals but doesn't know for what.
Thanks in advance
Davis, Whelan, O'Donnell, Groves, Lawless, Cronin, Colgan. Baltinglass, Dublin. Kildare.

Hi there
His name was Patrick Cronin. According to the 1911 census he was born in Kerry around 1876. Possibly earlier. It shows his father's name as John (Joannis) on his marriage record.

As far as I can see in ‘Stations of the British Army’ the only regiments stationed in Fermoy in 1897 were the 1st South Lancashire and the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers and they both appear to have been there the whole year.

A bit of Googling tells me that the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers went to South Africa in August 1899 to fight the Boers, and the 1st South Lancashire followed them a few months later.

That’s the usual reason for soldiers missing the 1901 census.

Rex
