Does anyone know if old employee records have been kept from Colthrop Mills in Thatcham and if so how they are accessed?

I have a number of ancestors who worked there with some interesting stories I would like to check out.

Many thanks  :)

Two possibilities that I can think of:

Contact the company that Reed Paper seems to have become (Reed-Elsivier) and see whether they have an archivist.

Contact the Berkshire Records Office to see whether they have any records.

Thanks Harry,  I will look up that Company this afternoon.

I see you are also researching Amors in Berkshire and Wiltshire - it wouldn't be the ones from Thatcham/Hungerford and Milton Lilbourne would it?

Thanks again

Monique,

You are welcome.  With regard to AMOR, mine appear to have originated around Devizes, although my Great Grandfather seems to have alternated his place of birth between Saltford, Somerset, Devizes and Atworth !!

Harry,

I thought it was a long shot - there were certainly a lot of Amors in Wiltshire - it can be hard to pin them down!!

Kind regards

Monique

For anyone else interested in Colthrop Mills, I had the following reply from BRO today:-

I have checked our indexes and we do hold some records relating to Colthrop Mills under reference D/EMT/B5/1-14. However, I am afraid that they are only papers and correspondence from the nineteenth century and do not relate to employees. I am afraid as we do not hold them, and as you are unable to get a response from the current owners of Colthrop Mills, it is unlikely that they survive.

There was a book written about Colthrop Mill, (in fact I think there were two) I would suggest that you give Thatcham's family book shop a call and ask Steven about the book or books, I did a quick search for you on google and found the information below, as I said Steven is probably you best bet as he owns the book shop and as the mill was such a large part of the area he would know straight away if there were any other books available.

http://familybooksonline.tbpcontrol.co.uk/tbp.direct/purchaseproduct/orderproduct/customerselectproduct/searchproducts.aspx?descriptionSearch=Colthrop+Mills+Remembered

The telephone number is 01635 871777 I would like to point out that I am not connected to the book shop, I am aware of the book as my late father used to work at the mill and was given a signed copy of the book by Robin Doe who worked along side him and was also a neighbour.
