Annie Passini - cannot find a death record.
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 18:35 BST (UK) »
I have a brick wall that's been plaguing me for a couple of years now regarding my GG Aunt.

Anna Augusta Pinsch/Pinch was born 1851 in the Geelong area.  Her parents were Johann Hermann Pietzsch and Christiana Zorga. For some reason all their children's births in Australia were registered under the Surname ZAHN. This was the only time they used that surname. Their Immigration records were under Pietzsch. The children all married as either Pinsch or Pinch.

She married on 21 Sept 1871 to James Gabriel Passini a native of Switzerland. Her father was one of the witnesses to the marriage. James and Annie had one child Amelia Annie Maria Passini born 11 Feb 1882 at Dunolly Victoria.

Annie is listed as living on her mother's death certificate in 1888 and on her father's  marriage certificate when he remarried in 1891.  From 1888 to 1899 she is listed in some Govt gazettes as being either held overnight in various local watch houses usually for drunken behaviour and on at 2 occasions she spent time in prison - mainly for failure to pay fines. I did think that she may have gone off the rails after the death of her mother, however the first lock up pre-dates her mother's death by several months.

Her husband James Passini applied to divorce her in 1891 however I am unable to view or copy the file as it was damaged in floods apparently and was listed as too fragile to see in 2007.

The last firm record I have of her is a reference in the Electoral rolls for 1903 for an Annie Pinch  of Rocky Lead Occupation Home Duties which is the same town her father was living at the time.  Her father died 27 April 1905, unfortunately his death certificate was filled out by his stepson from his 2nd marriage and none of the children of his 1st marriage are listed.

So any ideas or suggestions as to where to look next would be appreciated

The above is incorrect.

This Annie PINCH is her father Johann's second wife living with him at Rocky Lead.

Annie PASSINI is on the 1903 ERolls living at the Chinese Camp, ST ARNAUD, occupation - home duties.

Close by is her daughter Amelia PASSINI - home duties & ex husband James PASSINI - farmer living at EMU.

Oops thank you Merlin, you are correct and it will remind me to double check my facts before I hit that post button.

Yes she was in the 1903 Electoral roll in the Chinese camp at St Arnaud as Annie Passini. However after that it just seems to be a black hole for her.  I'll keep digging.

Thanks again

Do you have a copy of Amelia's marriage certificate from 1911 that gives information on her mother Annie?

Daughter Amelia's death was registered at St Arnaud, have you checked the cemetery to see if they are buried together?

No Merlin I don't yet have her daughter's marriage certificate. It is one of those on my long list of certificates that I still need to aquire. I have spoken with some descendants of that line and they don't know what happened to her either apparently Amelia never spoke about her mother.  I may have to bump this marriage certificate up the list to get it a little faster.

I had hoped she would show up on the next electoral roll which was 1906 but I can't locate her on it.

Debra thanks for that thought unfortunatley she is not buried with he mother. I have previously contacted the St Arnaud Cemetery look up volunteers, and they tell me  that according to the Cemetery records,  "Amelia Scilini is buried at St. Arnaud. She died 23 May 1920 and is buried in the Roman Catholic Area, Section 10/81. There is a headstone. She is buried with her daughter Margaret died 23 Nov 1933"

Nor is she buried with her parents - as far as we know although the Mt Prospect Cemetery records say only one Pinch is buried there and I have death certificates for 3 Pinch family members that according to the undertakers are buried at Mt Prospect.

Merlin I have now purchased a copy of the Marriage certificate of Amelia Passini, it lists her mother as Annie Pinch, but does not say she is deceased. If that information is accurate then that would push Annie's death past 9 August 1911.

Hi,
First of all she would not be under the name Pinch when she died, she could have taken any other surname if she happened to take up with another man before her death.

Where did daughter amelia marry? I looked on Trove hoping to find a reference to her marriage but no luck. Perhaps a local paper may have some reference to her marriage. Even death notices for Amelia, or once again her death certificate, though if the mother was in disgrace she may not have been mentioned.

Thank you Mum mum for your reply, I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I have spent most of the weekend in bed with a cold.

You are correct of course she probably would not have been buried as a Pinch unless the divorce actually went through. Other than Pinch or Passini as a surname I would be guessing. I have not found a 2nd marriage for her under the name of Pinch or Passini and several variants thereof, but of course this does not stop her simply living with someone.

Amelia married at Bealiba, and I had been unable to find mention of the wedding or Amelia's death notice on Trove either. PROV has a digitised copy of Amelia's will but unfortunately it was of no help as it was an application for probate on behalf of her husband as she died intestate.

Again thank you for your time in replying
