Kavanagh family
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 15:39 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather was Thomas Ryan Kavanagh born circa 1861.

The only additional info I have on him is the name and occupation of his father (from Thomas's wedding certificate in 1888), which is Peter Kavanagh, Coachman.

Any help gratefully received.
This was a message sent out several years ago by my cousin, Mark Thomas. I am continuing this search. We have information that Thomas Ryan Kavanagh was born in the Wicklow area, and his father was Peter.
Thomas came to England and was married to Susan Moore in 1888 while serving with the Scots Guards, in Windsor, Berkshire.
Once more, any help would be gratefully received.

I see a post back in 2004 mentioning the same name, but it didn't progress very far as there were too few clues. For records before the start of civil registration of births (1864) requires checking church records, and you need a few more clues to do this - including the denomination of your Kavanagh family and a more detailed a location - i.e. the town, townland or parish.

Kavanagh is quite a common surname, particularly in the east and south east and unfortunately if the family were RC then the occupation for Peter will probably not help, as this detail is not usually included in Catholic records.

see : Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

What exactly is listed as the place of birth state on the military record ?

I have found a copy of a birth certificate dated 3rd Nov 1888 for Marcella Kavanagh, daughter of James and Mary Kavanagh, of Upper Main Street, and this must be a relative of Thomas Kavanagh, my Great Grandfather.
Mary Kavanagh is shown as being born Mary Dournean.
It is from the register of the Arklow district, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow.
Is this of any help.
This copy was issued in 1948 and the various details are in Gaelic. with English sub-titles.

Hello,

there are Kavanaghs on Upper Main Street, Arklow in 1901 census including a Mary but no Marcella.
You have no idea who Marcella was? Did she emigrate to England?

....

The only Mary Dourneen marriage I see close to that time is in South Dublin in 1870 - but it doesn't cross  match to anyone with the surname Kavanagh...

Do you have the occupation for James from the birth cert - might help locate him...

Here's that 1870 Mary Dourneen marriage I mentioned - not directly connected to your Kavanghs but a few items that might be clues...

Marriage John Byrne & Mary Dourneen

Even though the marriage took place in Dublin, both the bride and groom give Arklow as their addresses. Also one of the witnesses is a Marcella Cullen - not a common Christian name..

James' occupation is listed as fisherman.
From other links on the family tree, James is probably a brother to Thomas Ryan Kavanagh as James recurs several times later as a Kavanagh christian name.
Also, Marcella is a christian name of Joseph Ryan Kavanagh's daughter born in Birkenhead, England in 1938. Joseph Ryan was the older brother to James Ryan Kavanagh, my grandfather who both were sons of the elusive Thomas Ryan Kavanagh, born in 1860 (poss. 1859) in Wicklow.
My family tree is available for public viewing on ancestry.co.uk.
Many thanks,
Jim
