Record Galway 1920's 1930's
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 12:34 BST (UK) »
Are there no references or records of residents of Galway City in the 1920's or 30's.  All information on this forum are for an earlier period.  My father was born in the 1920's but I can't find where to look for information on him or his parents/siblings anywhere on the internet.
Any help much appreciated.

Recent information is not usually online, except for the BMD Index which cover events for the Republic of Ireland up to 1958. You can use the details on this to order birth, marriage or death certs to see further details. See :

Hi there 'telfire'

When did your Dad marry, to whom and where ?

Getting your parents marriage cert is the first step !

Thank you both for the information.  My Dad married in Manchester but it was my Grandparents I am interested in.  My Grandfather was English but served in the Connaught Rangers as a boy soldier, married a girl Mattilda Bermingham in Galway and settled down there.  He was capped playing football for Ireland 3 times and played the saxaphone in the local cinema.  The family moved to Manchester in the mid 1930's 1 daughter and 3 sons.  I know the family history from then on but know nothing of their births or where they lived in Galway City prior to then.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Is this right?
Dad born 1920s - Galway.
Grandfather (English) married M Bermingham in Galway - about 1910- 1920.
You want to find out about dad and then backwards.
Have you looked for your father's birth in the Irish Civil Indexes on Family Search?
You may also find your grandparents marriage record there by searching for both by name and then matching the reference.
You could then send for birth certificate and marriage certificates to give you place names and your great grandfathers' names.

You could also begin to search English indexes for grandfather.

best wishes
heywood

Hi,

I take it that you mean you grandfather was English (birth) and not his surname.

Can you tell us what his actual name was ?

I can see a Matilda Birmingham getting married in 1918 BUT it was in Rathdown which is the outskirts or Dublin and Wicklow.

Birmingham is a popular Galway name but Matilda is fairly rare, was she christened another name do you know ?

Hi Tara,
I thought her maiden name was Bermingham with an 'e' she always pronounced it "Bermahum" my Grandfathers name was James Askew originally from an orphanage in Preston Lancs.  The children were Lilly, Seamus (James) Peter and one who is still living but memory is very poor.

Family Search has the probable marriage here

I think Matilda is named as Mary - if you search for her too,you will see that the reference is the same.
