Which William Hartop?
« on: Wednesday 15 August 12 08:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I've come to a stop with my Hartop ancestors and I need a second opinion!
My known ancestor was Dinah Hartop born 27th July 1828 in Barkby to William and Mary.
I wanted to find out more about William, so I found the family on the 1841 census and it says he was born abt 1806 in Barkby.
Looking on Familysearch, it appears there are two Williams born in Thurmaston around the right time:
William 7th November 1802 to James and Jane
William 16th March 1806 to William and Elizabeth.
On ancestry, there are a few public trees that mention the latter, saying he died aged around 20 but they have no source to confirm this information.
I looked up my William's children and they are (all born Barkby):
Joseph 1824
Thomas 1826
Dinah 1828
William 1831
Mary 1833
James 1836.

I then looked up all of the children born to James and Jane. They are:
William
James (baptised 1817 in Barkby)
Diana (born 1803 in Barkby)

Looking at the siblings of the 1806 William, they are:
John
Thomas
Sarah
Ann

I'm thinking my William is the one born to James and Jane, given the name of his children (Dinah is a bit like Diana and James?) He would also be 22 when the first child Joseph was born in 1824, whereas 1806 William would be 18.
Looking at marriages, I can only find my William's in 1822 to Mary Young in Scraptoft and one in 1834.
So 1802 William would be 20 in 1822 and 1806 William would be 16.
Does anyone else agree with me that my William's parents were James and Jane? Or have I missed other clues?

I am assuming that occupations do not help?

certainly the name Diana /Dinah  (def same but orally heard the same) seems to suggest the 1802 William s/o James & jane. only concern is that 1841 is usually rounded down. is william not on any other census?

looking on the 1851  there is the following 1851 sample census:

Mary Hartopp  53   b. scrapthorp
William  "        48   b. Barkby
William  "        19        "

this would seem to be your family and would agree that william is the 1802 one s/o James & Jane.

I think James and Jane are mine, I got all clever and looked for other Diana Hartop's and found one the 1861 census, a Diana Hartop born 1850 to a Thomas Hartop born abt 1827 in Leicester. His other children are:
Sarah Ann
John JAMES
JANE
Catherine.
Class: RG 9; Piece: 2290; Folio: 75; Page: 8; GSU roll: 542949.

This Thomas I'm guessing is my William's son and my Dinah's brother?!

But when I looked them up in 1851, I found this:
Name: Thomas Hartopp
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relation: Lodger
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: St Margaret, Leicestershire, England

Children:
Dinah Hartopp 1
Infant Hartopp 3 Mo
Class: HO107; Piece: 2088; Folio: 550; Page: 10; GSU roll: 87716.

I did think he may not be my Dinah's brother given where he said he was born in the 1851, but I found him in 1881 with John James and Jane and there he says he was born in Barkby!

SO, based on the 1779 baptism for James with Parents John Hartop and Mary Searson, does it seem likely that this is James' father?
From Familysearch:
John Hartop baptised 1738 in Keyham to Thomas and Elizabeth Hartop.
Would there potentially be others at the archives or would this be the only one? If it is the only one, then the trail goes cold because I can't find a marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth  :o
I'd really like to work on this family as I was in Melton church the other day and after saying to my Husband "wouldn't it be great to find an ancestor in here?" I later nearly fell over a slab in the church with a Hartopp couple from the 1600's!!!
