Bible Christian Marriages
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 19:17 BST (UK) »
I have never been able to prove the marriage of 2 people (Ruth Thomas to Nathaniel Joll).  Recent research has shown that Ruth was an enthusiastic member of the Bible Christians.  Looking at the chronologies of these two people, if they did get married, the most likely time, in my opinion, would have been spring 1886 and at the BC Chapel at St Just in Penwith.  However their marriage is NOT recorded by the GRO (NB I have also checked GRO Overseas).  Has anyone else had experience of BC marriages where the minister, who conducted the ceremony, failed to inform the Registrar General ie was it a common occurrence?

Hi

Nathaniel does not appear on any census after 1881 - b 1865 Truro

Ruth is living with her mother in 1891 and is just with the children in 1901.  Shown as married on both censuses.

Those members of my family that were Bible Christians had their marriages registered - as required by law.

I believe the law said marriages had to take place in an Anglican Church?

There is a large gap in ages between the 2 children

1901 shows Mary Jane aged 14 then Dorothy E aged 2

Cornwall OPC Database is showing 2 children for Nathaniel and Ruth.

Baptism 5th October 1887, St Just in Penwith
Mary Jane Joll, daughter to Nathaniel and Ruth, carpenter of Pleasant Row

9th October 1889, St Just in Penwith
Ada Florence Joll, daughter to Nathaniel and Ruth, carpenter of Pleasant Row

The fact that these are NOT indexed under non-conformist, suggests they are Anglican baptisms?

A tree on Ancestry has Nathaniel's death in South Africa, 1900?
Maybe a Boer War death?
Indeed, FindMyPast has a Boer War record for an N Joll, in the Army Ordnance Corps.
