DUTCH family, Ireland

Hi,

I would like to find out more about the Dutch family who emigrated to Cardiff from Ireland during the 1850s.  I am a descendant of Michael Dutch born ca. 1842 in Ireland.  We were like to try and find out where in Ireland the family was from.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages started in 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages so you'd need to search for church records, etc. once you find a location (parish if not actual townland).

In 1911 census there were only 7 people with the surname Dutch- 1 in Cork (born England) and 7 in Dublin in one household (but head of household George was born Perth, Scotland).
In 1901 George is the only Dutch in Ireland but lists birthplace as England.

The civil registration index (www.familysearch.org) only shows 26 results for 'Dutch'- some will be for the people in the 1911 census.

As with any research you need to work back through all possible records for clues. So, starting with Michael Dutch, did he marry?- what's given as father's name and occupation on his marriage certificate? Was Michael alive in 1911? if so, worth checking for a birthplace as that census tends to show a more exact place than 'Ireland' in  many cases (we aren't allowed to do lookups for that census on Rootschat).

   The Griffiths Valuation shows three Dutch families in Ireland in the early 1850s headed by:-
Michael Dutch Parish of Geashill Kings County (Now Offaly)
Samuel Dutch Parish of St.Mary Dublin
Lesser (sic) Dutch parish of St.Anne Dublin

1881 10 Paradise Place Cardiff
Jane 37 wid dressmaker bn Stroud, Mosa should be Rosa 13, George 11, Joseph & Mary Ann both 9yrs.
1891 Jane is employed as a nurse to a family in Knill Herts, Annie 19 also employed as a nurse.
Looks like a wealthy family.

From the information posted earlier Michael's wife Jane was born in England (Stroud, Gloucestershire).

Cardiff had a very large Irish-born population and there are quite a few threads about it on the Glamorgan board such as these-

My feeling is that the Irish families in Cardiff would have considered themselves as Irish for a few generations at least.
Years ago I was trying to trace a relative in U.S. records and kept coming up with her birthplace as 'Ireland' in census and other records until I found a place of birth given as 'Cardiff, Ireland' and eventually discovered that her parents were born in Cork but she and siblings were all born in Cardiff even though she and a brother put down Ireland as their birthplace in U.S. records.
