Hi Elaine,

If getting the marriage cert of Michael and Catherine you need all the details that I posted.

You could be lucky in that the witness' could be an Aughney or a Byrne which would give you a lead.

Shane is correct re the death certs. I only get the ones for my direct blood line.

Getting the ones that you listed would be a very expensive gamble as they can't guarantee relationships between people.

One suggestion would be to send a polite email to the local church, giving them as much information as possible and asking them clearly what names you are looking for and see can the priest or his secretary help.

Tara

will contact Leos' cousins' wife and ask what the RC Church in Bagenalstown is..some of her family live there.

I did wonder about doing that, but didnt know if they would look for me....someone descended from my gt gt grandads' second wife, told me the family was from Tuam,Galway.....my dau lives 5 mls from there, and when she mentioned to the clerk that her late f-in-law used to do the presbytery gardens, she let us look thro baptisms and marriages and deaths....no sign of em at all....we spent over 2 hrs copying all similar names out!

thats why i wondered about contacting the PP in bagenalstown...I thought he might think I was very cheeky for asking! :-)

Was in the Irish Life centre in Dublin Thurs this week....got the wedding cert for Michael Aughney and catherine Byrne....Michaels' father down as John Aughney.,Boherduff.Witnesses Edward Larkin and Bridgid Larkin.

Found an Elizabeth Aughney on Ancestry..she d. 22nd Dec.1866,aged 11 yrs, making her born in 1855,just 4 yrs before Michael Aughney,so I got a copy of her death cert today, figuring that as she was a child, one of the parents would have been the informant....it said John Aughney,Kilcarrig(which is part of Bagenalstown)..present at death. So it looks highly likely that Elizabeth was the sister of Michael.

I was given some pics of gravestones...one of them saying...."Erected by John Aughney of Kildrenagh in memory of his mother Bridget Aughney who dep'd this life June 13th 1845,aged 69 yrs. Also his father James Aughney, who dep'd this life Jan 24 th 1846,aged 79 yrs. Also his nephew James Aughney who died young"

As Bridget would have been b.c1776 and James b.c1767,Bridget would have been 42 and James 51,when John Aughney was born in c1818,could they be parents to John?
Kildrenagh fits...my husbands' first cousin lives in Ballywilliamroe, which is the next townland to Kildrenagh.

Any advice on how to prove this please?

Elaine

Dr. Honoria Aughney was a friend of Kevin Barry's in UCD in 1919/1920 - See 'No More Lonely Scaffolds: Kevin Barry and his times" by Donal O'Donovan pages 51, 57, 127-8, 164, 184

http://www.turtlebunbury.com/history/history_heroes/hist_hero_kevinbarry.html

Honoria later became Medical Officer for Wexford, she is also referenced in this thesis - Irish Medical Women c.1880s-1920s: The origins, education and careers of early women medical graduates from Irish institutions.

Eilis Aughney used to hide guns for Robert Bonfield after 'jobs' during the Civil War - see her Witness Statement 1054 - http://www.bureauofmilitaryhistory.ie/reels/bmh/BMH.WS1054.pdf

I am researching Robert Bonfield, who was a distant relative, and would like to find out more about his friendship with the Aughney sisters and their circle of friends in UCD at the time.

This page of Genealogy also seems to have a lot of information on the Aughney family

I write regularly to Sue who wrote this article....there were only 6 families of Aughney in the whole of the 32 counties in 1852(Irish times)..all were in Carlow.
As well as myself and Sue,there is a lady in Cork, and a man in England, all looking Aughneys, and we're all looking different ones!
I am looking Newtown,.dunleckney.,..Carlow Aughneys.
I think John Aughney,b.c1818 may have been baptised either in Newtown Church or Bagenalstown, but I can't find it online.

I sent an email to the clerk(?)at Bagenalstown RC Church....I had rung her  a couple of months ago when we were in Carlow/Kildare. She said it wasn't possible for me to look through the records, but that if I emailed her with the name, she would look as soon as she had time. I asked her for the baptism of John Aughney,b.c1818...... The online records only start 1820, so my only chance of getting any further back,is from the actual records kept by the Church. I haven't heard anything back yet...hope she got my email!
